1. Im Hŭijae任熙載 (1472–1504; styled Kyŏng’yŏ) and I loved to share poetry and wine together. Soon after he passed the civil service examination, a calamity from the sky cut his life short. How sorrowful indeed! During the summer of the pyŏngjin year (1496), he was staying at the East Lake. He sent twelve quatrains on “Diverting Myself from Boredom” 解悶 my way. Here, I present two of them. 養素堂中十二春悲歡無日不相親浮雲已去流水盡燕語雕梁席滿塵年將而立費居諸功業無成鬢髮疏賴有江頭數椽靜經春閑曬腹中書 In the Hall of Nourishing Simplicity,we spent twelve springs together. In joy or sorrow, there was not a day that we did not share. Now the drifting clouds have departed, and flowing waters have come to an end.Swallows chatter on the carved beams, while the mats gather dust.Approaching the age of thirty, I have spent my years in vain.Having achieved nothing, only my hair has thinned.Luckily, by the riverthere are several quiet huts.I shall pass this spring idly, basking in the sun the books stored in my belly. Original annotation: The Hall of Nourishing Simplicity (Yangso Hall) is the hall belonging to vice-county magistrate of P’ungch’ŏn.
