吾家伯兄。幼有逸才。十歲前。盡讀古文韻府群書。詩學大成常諷在口。十六中進士初試。病不赴會試。年十七夭歿。先君。嘗與鄕舊十餘人。結爲稧伯兄有詩曰。五百王都第一州。儒林修契最佳遊。踏靑三月消長晝。泛菊重陽咏晩秋。曲水流觴何足羨。龍山落帽亦難儔養生送死皆無欠。倣得人間樂與憂。

Korean Translation

우리 집 맏형은 어렸을 때부터 뛰어난 재주가 있었다. 열 살 전에 고문(古文)과 《운부군옥(韻府群玉 시 짓는 데 쓰여 지는 참고서)》를 읽어 시학(詩學)이 대성되었다. 항상 입 안에서는 글 외는 소리가 흥얼거렸다. 열여섯 살에 경기우도(京畿右道)의 향시 진사 초시(鄕試進士初試)에 합격하였으나, 회시(會試)에는 병으로 나가지 못하였다. 나이 열일곱 되던 병진년(丙辰年) 7월 29일에 경성 제생원동(濟生院洞)에 있는 남의 집에서 죽었다. 선군께서 지으신 〈삼몽부합전(三夢符合傳)〉에 다음과 같은 내용이 있다. 선군께서 고향 친구 10여명과 계를 맺었는데, 맏형께서 시를 짓기를, 오백년 도읍 터는 으뜸가는 고을이요 / 五百王都第一州 선비들 계 닦으니 가장 좋은 놀음일세 / 儒林脩禊最佳遊 3월엔 들풀 밟아 긴 낮을 보내고 / 踏靑三月消長晝 9월엔 국화 띄워 늦은 가을 읊조리네 / 泛菊重陽詠晩秋 굽이진 물에 잔 띄우니 부러울 게 무엇이며 / 曲水流觴何足羨 용산에서 모자 날리니 이에 짝할쏜가 / 龍山落帽亦難儔 삶을 누리고 죽음을 맞으매 유감없이 하세 / 養生送死當無欠 사람의 한 세상엔 기쁨과 슬픔 다 있나니 / 做得人間樂與憂 하였다. 맏형께서 행서(行書)를 잘 쓰시어 당신이 손수 쓰신 것만 하여도 무려 수십 권이 되는데, 나도 그것을 얻어 읽었다.

English Translation

From early age, my eldest brother had extraordinary talent. Before the age of ten, he had finished reading all books on ancient prose and rhyme dictionaries. He made great strides in poetry, and poems never left his mouth. At sixteen he passed the Preliminary Literary Licentiate Examination (chinsa ch’osi), but due to illness could not attend the Metropolitan Examination (hoesi). He died at the young age of seventeen. My father, together with some ten old friends from hometown, often organized purification rituals by the river. A poem by my eldest brother reads, 五百王都第一州儒林修契最佳游踏靑三月消長晝泛菊重陽詠晚秋曲水流觴何足羨龍山落帽亦難儔養生送死皆無欠做得人間樂與憂 In the royal capital of five hundred years, in the number one place in province, Confucian scholars hold purification ritual, Oh, most wonderful gathering! Strolling on the new grass of the third month, we enjoy the long day.Drinking chrysanthemum wine on the Double Ninth Day,we sing of late autumn.Why envy them floating the goblets on a winding creek?Losing the cap in Dragon Mountain,what does it also measure up to?Preserving health and meeting death, we will not lack both,making life in the mortal world joyous and sorrowful.
