1. When on an official mission away from home, every local office with kisaeng regularly offers boudoir companionship. But since the Deputy Director at the Bureau of State Records (kamsa) is an overseer of demeanors and morals, even if the area offered kisaeng for him to sleep with, he could not accept them. This has also been an established rule. When Grand Prince (puwŏn’gun) of Chinch’ŏn, Kang Hon 姜渾 (1464–1519), went to Kyŏngsang province on an official mission, he fell in love with a kisaeng from Sŏngju, known as Ŭndaesŏn 銀臺仙 (Silver Tower Fairy) (15th century). One day, he had to leave Sŏngju and travel to nearby cities. At noon, he took a rest at Pusang station, and since the station was halfway to Sŏngju, the kisaeng accompanied him. When evening came, they could not bear the separation, so they spent the night together at the station. The next morning, Kang wrote a poem and gave it to her. At Pusang station, we had a moment of delight. The guests had no blankets, and candles were burnt to ashes.Among the twelve peaks of Mt. Wu, I was lost in an early morning dream. On that spring night at the station tower,I didn’t feel the chill. His beddings had already been sent to Kaeryŏng, and not having the time to retrieve them, they spent the night without blankets. |
