| 近有石川林公億齡。以能詩名。有人請賦酒詩。呼甘字韻。林卽應聲曰。老去方知此味甘。又乎三字。應聲曰。一盃通道不須三。呼男字。應聲曰。君看嵆院陶劉李。不羨公侯伯子男。眞奇作也。余歎賞之餘。乃次其韻以戒兒孫。曾聞大禹飮而甘。嗜酒全身十二三。勿把一盃宜戒愼。須知遠色是貞男。反林之意。而詩則不及遠矣。 |

| 근래 석천(石川) 임억령(林億齡) 공은 시에 능하여 이름이 난 자이다. 어떤 사람이 술을 노래하는 시를 짓기를 청하며 감(甘) 자 운을 부르니, 임억령이 즉시 응하기를,
늙어서야 비로소 이 맛 단 줄 알았네 / 老去方知此味甘 라고 하거늘 또 삼(三) 자 운을 부르니, 응하기를, 한 잔 술에도 도통하니 석 잔을 마시랴 / 一杯通道不須三 하였다. 또 남(男) 자 운을 부르니, 곧 응하기를, 그대는 혜강(동진 때 죽림 7현의 한 사람)과 완적(죽림 7현의 한 사람)이 유계(한고조)를 조롱한 것을 아는가 / 君看嵇阮陶劉季 공후백자남도 부러워하지 않는다 / 不羨公侯伯子男 라고 하였으니, 참으로 기이(奇異)한 작품이다. 내가 감탄하고 나서 그 시에 차운하여 자손들을 경계하기를, 일찍 들으니, 대우는 마셔보고 달게 여겼다지만 / 曾聞大禹飮而甘 술 좋아하고 몸 온전한 이는 열에 두셋뿐이다 / 嗜酒全身十二三 한 잔 술도 잡지 말고 마땅히 삼가 경계할 것이요 / 勿把一杯宜戒愼 모름지기 여색을 멀리할 줄 아는 자가 정남이다 / 須知遠色是貞男 하였다. 임석천의 뜻을 뒤집은 것이나 시는 훨씬 미치지 못한다. |

| 1. Presently, Im Ŏngnyŏng 林億齡 (1496–1568; sobriquet Sŏkch’ŏn [Rock River]) is renowned for his poetry. When someone requested a poem on wine and chose the rhyme word “sweet” 甘, Im immediately responded, 老去方知此味甘 Now that I am old I realize that this wine tastes sweet.The person again chose “three” 三 as a rhyme word, and Im replied, 一盃通道不須三 With a single cup, I reach the Way, so why do I need three? Once again, the person called out “man” 男 as a rhyme word, and Im replied, 君看嵇阮陶劉李不羨公侯伯子男 Please take a look at Ji, Ruan, Tao, Liu, and Li. They did not envy dukes, marquis, earls, viscounts, or barons. These are truly amazing (ki) works. After admiring these verses, I wrote a poem using the same rhymes as a way to caution posterities. 曾聞大禹飮而甘嗜酒全身十二三勿把一盃宜戒愼須知遠色是貞男 I once heard the Great King Yu thought the wine was sweet.Lovers of wine, preserve their lives,only two or three out of ten.Don’t even take a single cup without exercising caution. Know that distancing oneself from the love of sexmakes you a true man. I have reversed the meaning of Im’s poem, but my own verse is far inferior to his. |
