Original Text

English Translation
King Sŏngjong loved State Councilor (ch’ansŏng) Son Sunhyo’s talent and valued him. Once during a meeting with the king, the king offered him wine and Son ended up becoming very inebriated. The king asked, “Can you write me a poem?” Son replied, “On your order, my King.” The king chose “Zhang Liang” as a topic and “middle” 中 as a rhyme word. His plan was not carried out in the middle of Bolangsha. The king again chose “duke” 公 as a rhyme word, and Son responded, 杖劍歸來相沛公 Grasping the sword, he returned to meet the Duke of Pei. To the rhyme word “fiefdom” 封, Son said, 借箸已能成漢業分茅卻自讓齊封 Borrowing the chopsticks, he was already able toaccomplish the founding of the Han.Dividing the feud, he declined the offer to govern a fiefdom. To the rhyme word “pine” 松, 平生智略傳黃石末路心期付赤松 His whole life, with wisdom and wits, he transmitted the message of Master Yellow Rock.At the end of his road, he wished in his heart to follow Master Red Pine. To the rhyme word “hero” 雄, 堪恨韓彭已菹釀功成勇退是英雄 Deeply regretting that Han Xin and Peng Yue were already killed and minced, after making his achievements, he bravely withdrew. This makes him a hero! There was nothing that he could not answer. The king was greatly pleased and said, “You are someone who people say, ‘The older he gets, the stronger he becomes.’ After drinking to their hearts’ content, the king ordered a palace musician to play the pipa and sing the poem and also ordered Son to get up and dance. Too intoxicated, Son collapsed and could not rise. The king untied his blue brocade satin jacket and covered him and returned to his quarter. A special relationship between the king and the minister like this, even to this day, moves those who hear to praise.
