尹公長源。未釋褐時。一日。坐小軒。門有一鮮衣奴。持刺請謁。而一官人。衣冠容貌甚整麗。長源曰。此必誤也。豈有官人來門者。其人曰。必謁尹進士云云。長源乃請客人。坐定。其人離席長跪曰。某有一事。願塵左右。囁嚅不堪。長源曰。觀公狀貌。類達官。有何事。來叩寒士。其人曰。張公玉方爲南陽府伯。有婢能琴歌者。適到京。不佞偶與邂逅。仍以鍾情。眷眷不忍別。請寬於張公。張公不許。至請名卿書抵之。終不許。乃曰。若得尹進士詩。則吾當借與云。故敢冒而來請。仍抽出灑金紅花牋一幅。進之曰。願明公不憚一揮手勞。以解渴望。長源笑曰。何不以他詩。爲我作而解之也。其人曰。高明詩名。振一世。故張公必欲得之。豈可以他詩相欺哉。長源遂題一律曰。寶鴨香銷罷。蘭堂客散初。燈寒小屛暗。月上半簾踈。吐舌皆成妬。申盟更怕虛。郎君情似妾。何惜百車磲。寫畢贈之。其人拜謝而去。無何。其人來謝曰。張使君得詩大喜。卽還琴姬矣。其人乃王孫云。

Korean Translation

윤결(尹結) 공이 젊었을 때 어느날 작은 마루에 나와 앉아 있는데 문이 열리면서 고운 옷을 입은 종 하나가 나타나, 명함을 내어 놓기에 문으로 가서 맞이하니, 한 관인(官人)이 따라 들어오는데, 의관과 용모가 매우 바르고 깨끗하였다. 장원이 말하기를, “ 반드시 잘못 찾아오신 겁니다. 어찌 우리 집에 올 관인이 있겠습니까. 그만두시고 다른 데 가서 찾으시면 다행이겠습니다.” 하자, 그 관인은 말하기를, “꼭 윤 진사님을 뵙고자 합니다.” 하였다. 장원은 바로 갓과 옷을 가져오라 명하고 손님을 들어오시도록 하니, 그 관인은 자리를 옮겨 꿇어 앉아 말하기를, “제가 한 가지 부탁할 일이 있어 어른을 번거롭게 하니, 말이 나오지 아니하여 감히 여쭙지 못하고 있었습니다. 고명하신 어른께서 어떻게 생각하실는지 알지 못하겠나이다.” 하였다. 장원이 말하기를, “공의 모습을 뵈옵건대 현달한 관원 같으신데, 무슨 일이 있으시기에 이렇게 오시어 이름도 없는 저를 찾으셨습니까.” 하였다. 그 관인은 용모를 단정히 하고 말하기를, “장옥견(張玉見) 선생이 남양부백(南陽府伯)이 되었는데, 거문고 잘 타는 사람이 차례가 되어 서울에 왔었는데, 제가 우연히 그와 만나는 기회를 얻게 되어 그것을 계기로 정이 함빡 들어 떨어지려 하여도 차마 떨어질 수 없게 되고 말았습니다, 장공에게 관대하게 용납하기를 청해 보았지만 허락해 주지 않았고 심지어는 이름난 어른들의 글을 가져다가 청을 넣어 보았지만 그래도 허락하지 못하겠다 하시더니, 말씀하시기를, ‘만일 윤 진사의 시를 얻게 된다면, 내가 1년 동안 빌려 주겠다.’ 하였습니다. 그러므로 제가 감히 두려움을 무릅쓰고 와서 청하는게 올시다.” 하고, 이어서 술과 돈과 홍화전(紅花牋 글 쓰는 종이)한 폭을 꺼내서 무릎을 꺼내서 무릎을 꿇고 바치면서, “원하옵건대 명공(明公)께서 한 번 글 지으시는 노고를 아끼지 마시고 베푸시어 이 목마르고 주린 사람의 소망을 풀게 해 주십시오.” 하였다. 이 말을 듣고 장원이 웃으면서 말하기를, “왜 다른 시를 구해다가 내가 지은 양하여 이 문제를 해결하지 아니합니까.” 하니, 그는 또 말하기를, “고명한 선생의 시명(詩名)이 당대에 제일인 까닭으로 장공께서 꼭 얻고자 하옵니다. 다른 분의 시야 어디 이를 나위가 있습니까.” 하였다. 장원이 마침내 율시(律詩) 한 수를 내리쓰니, 보압좋은 향로(옛날의 향로는 오리 모양이었다)에 향불 잦아지고 / 寶鴨香銷罷 난당(아름다운 방 또는 여자가 쓰는 그윽한 방)에는 연기 흩어지네 / 蘭堂烟散初 등잔불 식어가니 작은 병풍은 어슴푸레하고 / 燈寒小屛暗 달 떠오르니 반쯤 드린 발에 빛 새어 들어 오누나 / 月上半簾疎 혀를 내밀면 모두 시샘을 이루고 / 吐舌皆成妬 맹약을 삼으면 또 헛될까 두렵구나 / 申盟更怕虛 낭군(郞君)의 정이 나와 같을 양이면 / 郞君情似妾 어찌 백년 된 옥이라도 아낄 것인가 / 何惜百年磲 하였다. 다 써서 주니, 그 관인이 고맙다 인사하고 돌아갔다. 얼마 후에 그 관인이 와서 사례하여 말하기를, “장 사또께서 선생의 시를 얻고 크게 기뻐하여 마침내 거문고 타는 아가씨를 돌려보내라고 하지 않게 되었습니다.” 그 관인은 옥천군수(沃川郡守) 왕손명(王孫名)이었다.

English Translation

Before Yun Kyŏl began his official career, he was sitting in his studio one day when a servant in a brightly colored dress holding a name card came to his gate and said his master wished to see Yun. An elegantly dressed and well-groomed official stood next to him. Yun replied, “You must be mistaken. How could an official come and visit me?” The man stated, “I must see Literary Licentiate Yun.” So Yun welcomed the guest in and they sat down. The man rose from his seat and prostrated before Yun and said, “I have a problem, and it is quite inappropriate,” he spoke with great hesitation. Yun replied, “I see that you look like an accomplished official. For what matter do you come and bow to this humble scholar?” The man replied, “Chang Ok 張玉 (b. 1493) was just appointed Magistrate of Namyang. He has a servant girl, a singer and musician, who happened to visit the capital. I met her by chance and fell in love with her. Having feelings for her, I cannot bear to part from her. I requested Mr. Chang to relieve her, but he did not consent. I presented him with writings by famous high officials and asked again. But he eventually did not consent and said, ‘If you give me a poem by Literary Licentiate Yun, then I would lend her to you.’ That is why I dare rashly come and ask you.” Then he pulled out from his sleeve a roll of gold-sprinkled and red-flower-dyed paper and said, “I pray that you not mind belabor your hand and satisfy my heart’s wish.” Yun laughed and said, “Why don’t you say someone else’s poem is mine and fulfill your wish?” He said, “Your poetic fame has shaken the whole generation. That is why Mr. Chang must wish to have it. How can I deceive him using someone else’s poem?” Yun then composed the following regulated verse, 寶鴨香銷罷蘭堂客散初燈寒小屏暗月上半簾疏吐舌皆成妒申盟更怕虛郎君情似妾何惜百車磲 In the precious mandarin duck burner, fragrances have stopped.In the Orchid Hall, the guests begin to scatter.By the cold lamp, the small screen is dark.The moonlight scatters through the half open curtain.What comes from the tongue all turn to words of envy.The vows made, I am afraid, will come to nothing.If your love, O Sir, is like mine,how could you not spare a precious tridacna shell? After finishing writing, Yun gave it to the man. The man thanked him and left. Not long after, the man came back to thank Yun, saying, “Magistrate Chang was greatly delighted to obtain your poem and gave me his singing girl in return.” It is said that the man was a royal descendent.
