English Translation
A quatrain by Second Minister (ch’amp’an) Sŏng Suik 成壽益 (1528–1598), composed when he was Assistant Apparitor (chwamak) and commended by my late father Ch’a Sik 車軾 (1517–1575) as the best, reads, 行來千里動經旬看盡東隅眼更新不識渺然滄海外有何天地有何人 Traveling a thousand li journey, on the move for ten days, seeing all of eastern corners, my eyes are renewed.I don’t know the boundless blue sea beyond, what heaven and earth and what people there are. When he was Assistant Governor (tosa), after transferring from Ch’ungch’ŏng province to Kangwŏn province, Minister Sŏng wrote, Leaving Songni Mountain, beyond its hillocks, with smile I gaze at the P’ungak Mountains, its eight thousand peaks. When my father was Magistrate of P’yŏnghae, Chief Minister Yi Chunmin presented the following poem to him, A place to get drunk all life,Pyŏnghae’s Mangyang Pavilion!I send you there to delight yourself in its midst. Endless feelings rise in dusty winds. When Pak Ran saw it, he laughed and said, “How can a poem by Your Honorable can have a faulty tone in it? You must change it.” Minister Yi replied, “How could you understand the saying that one should not add vinegar to clear broth and water?”
