高麗末。有一高士。隱德不仕。卜居江上。死後朝士數人。訪其舊居。壁上有所題詩。剝落只見一句。蕉鳴箔外知山雨。帆出峰頭見海風。朝士吟咏久之。相謂曰。階下芭蕉足知上句。帆見海風未也。少選前浦忽有一風帆。轉出峰外。盖從海口上也。
고려 말에 어떤 고상한 선비 한 사람이 있었는데, 덕을 숨기고 벼슬하지 아니하면서 강 위에 자리 잡고 살았다. 죽은 뒤에 벼슬아치 몇 사람이 그의 옛집을 찾았더니, 벽 위에 그가 지은 시가 붙어 있었는데, 긁혀 떨어져 다만 한 구절 밖에 볼 수 없었다. 그 글에, 파초(芭蕉) 소리가 문발 밖에서 들리니 산 비가 오는 줄 알겠고 / 蕉鳴薄外知山雨 배 돛대가 봉우리 끝에서 나오니 바닷 바람이 부는 것을 짐작하겠다 / 帆出峯頭見海風 하였다. 이 글을 본 벼슬아치들이 한참 동안 읊조리더니, 서로 말하기를, “섬돌 아래 파초란 말을 보고 윗 구절을 알만 하지만 재 돛을 보고 바닷바람이 부는 것을 짐작한다는 것은 모르겠다.” 하였다. 조금 지나서 앞 포구에 홀연히 한 척의 배가 돛에 바람을 잔뜩 안고 봉우리 밖에서 점점 나왔다. 이것을 보게 되면, 배는 해구로부터 올라오는 것이다.
In late Koryŏ, there was a recluse. He concealed his virtues, did not take office, and lived by a river. After he died, several scholar-officials visited his old abode. On the wall, there was a poem. It was peeled off so they could only see one verse. 蕉鳴箔外知山雨帆出峰頭見海風 When the banana leaf patters behind the bamboo screen, I know there is a rain in the mountains.When a sail emerges from the mountaintop, I see the ocean breeze. After reciting it for a long time, the officials said to each other, “From what follows “the banana leaf,” we can understand the first line, but not “When a sail emerges … I see the ocean breeze.”” After a moment, they suddenly saw in the river in front a sail turning and appearing from beyond the peak, coming from a seaport.
