English Translation
During the time of King Ŭijong (r. 1147–1170) of Koryŏ, to commemorate the dedication of black oxen from Ch’ŏnggyo station, the king ordered his officials to compose poems, using “room” 房 and “hall” 堂 as rhyme words. No poem was found satisfactory, but there was one line that was rather wonderful, Black peonies arrive at the Snow Hall. One scholar who was good (sŏn) at poetry heard this and composed a poem. He wrote these striking verses (kyŏnggu), At Enclosing Valley Pass veiled in morning mist, you return riding on a purple cloud. In spring at Peach Forest, the oxen graze, treading on red rooms. The king saw and admired its beauty (mi) and made him an official.
