When So Seyang was young, feeling confident about his uprightness, he always said, “Those who are enticed by women are not true men.” Hearing that, Hwang Chini 黃眞伊 (15th century), a kisaeng in Songdo, had outstanding talent and beauty, he swore to his friends, “I will stay with her for thirty days. When I leave her, I will not have a hint of lingering feelings for her. If I stay one more day past the time limit, you can say I am not a man.” He traveled to Songdo and met her. Indeed, she was a legendary beauty. He had a relationship with her and set a time limit of one month. The day before his departure, he and Hwang ascended South Tower for a feast. Hwang, without appearing sad, simply asked him, “You and I are about to separate. How can I not say a few words. Please allow me to present to you my clumsy (chol) poem.” So consented. She then wrote a regulated verse and presented to him. In the moonlit courtyard, beech trees are bare.Covered in frost, wild chrysanthemums are yellow. At the high tower, one foot from the sky,we are drunk after a thousand cups of wine.Chilly streams match the sound of zither.Fragrant plum blossoms infuse the sound of flute.Tomorrow morning, after we part, our loving feelings will last like rippling waves. So read and sighed, saying, “Ah! I am not a man!” And then he stayed longer. |
