On the road to Kyŏngwŏn in Hamgyŏng province to take his post, Hong Suju 洪受疇 (1642–1704; styled Kuŏn) reached Kosan station. County Administrator (togu) Wŏn Sŏngyu 元聖兪 (17th century; styled Myŏngŏ) was away at the time, so Hong left a poem for him. I arrived at Kosan station.Who is playing “Flowing Waters” on the zither? Missing you, I cannot sleep.Bright moon ascends the distant hill. The poem can be called a striking verse (kyŏngjak). When Wŏn recited the poem to then Governor (kwanch’alsa) Yi Sŏu, Yi applauded in a high praise and said, “As for poetic talent, Hong must be the crown in your group.”
