As a youth, Yi Chich’ŏn (b. 1589; sobriquet Sap’o [Sandy Shore]) was indulgent and fell in love with a singing girl. One day when he went to visit her, she was away and only her zither was there. He wished to leave but the evening bell had already tolled. After sitting there alone quietly, Yi wrote a quatrain on the wall and returned. Ten years later, when Yi visited Chŏlla province, he met a woman at an inn. She was already old but still beautiful. She asked Yi, “Isn’t your name Yi Chich’ŏn?” Yi replied, “Yes.” The woman said, “Do you remember the singing girl you fell in love with in a certain year? I am her companion so and so. I always remember the poem you wrote on the wall. I did not forget and kept it in heart. My friend had already died, and I too have aged. Now as a shaman, I wander the south. When I recollect the bygone days, truly it is like a dream.” Then she wept. Yi asked her, “Can you recite my poem?” The woman then recited, Blue sky and a crescent moon still linger at dawn.Winding waterside and delicate orchids, it already feels like fall. Holding your jade zither, I cannot play.Only the sorrow of parting today is in my heart. She asked, “I know your poems are famous throughout the world. I would like you to write me a poem.” She then took off her jacket and offered it to him. Yi wrote on it the following quatrain, Your jacket and sleeves of Yue silk exude fragrant aroma.Your slender and graceful waist is slightly larger than a fist.In the evening you enter the shaman mountain and become a fairy. At times, following the passing rain, you descend on Gaotang.
