(1592–1645)’s style name was Chiwŏn and his sobriquet Chijae (Dwelling Studio). During the reign of King Kwanghaegun, as an unemployed scholar, he submitted a memorandum on his own accord to protest the injustice suffered by Grand Prince Yŏngch’ang and to stop the scheme to depose the queen. He was imprisoned for six year, subjected to interrogations and punishments, and exiled to a remote frontier. When King Injo came to the throne, he was released and awarded a government post. Once ascending the Four Immortals Pavilion, Cho composed the following quatrain, At the Four Immortals Pavilion, one immortal roams. In Three Day Beach, he stays a half day.Late spring, among green peach trees, no one is seen.Under the bright moon, I listen to the long flute, leaning from a magnolia boat.
