When Minister Kim Suhang was appointed to serve in Hamgyŏng province, he wrote the poem “On Ungju Guest House 題雄州客館” which reads, 天氣常寒地不毛海洋曾被羯奴臊戎妝妓隊能馳馬皮服人家盡養獒官酒苦酸芻麥汁旅燈愁碧爇鯨膏陰山壯雪埋行路時聽城頭虎夜嗥 The weather is always cold, the land without grass.Haeyang once reeked with the foul stench of the Jie tribe.A band of courtesans in Rong dressesgallop on horses with ease. People donned in leather clothesall raise mastiffs. The guest house wine is bitter and sourmade from cheap barley extract. The lamp at the lodge is sadly blueburning on whale fat.The big snowfall at the Yin Mountainshas concealed the footpaths. At times I hear from the top of the city wallhowls of tigers at night.Chŏngp’yŏng Magistrate (pusa) Hong Sŏkku 洪錫龜 (1621–1679) wrote a poem matching the rhymes. Wandering in the frontier provincehas turned my hair white. The water always tastes fishy, and the millets taste foul.Shaman sacrifice is their old custom, offering many oxen.Using the local court as a chancehalf the people fight like mastiffs. They roast the cressesand use them as salt. From the hemp seeds, they make cooking oil.Specially, in this journey, what makes me most anxiousis the post station servant’s horse callthat sounds like a gibbon’s cry. Both poems are exceptional (chŏlga), but Hong’s is a little inferior in style and vigor (kyŏngnyŏk).
