When Hong Suju was appointed as Magistrate (pusa) of Kyŏngwŏn, before departure he wrote a poem in response to a farewell poem by a friend. With a flask of wine at the crook of the wall, you are sending me off on a journey.Chrysanthemum blossoms and maple leavesfill the courtyard. In the faraway northwest land, mountains are often white.Southeast of the world, oceans are always blue.Do I dare complain about the next six yearsnow facing the road ahead?I cannot bear a thousand-miledistance from the court.A true man thinks lightly of good-byeand goes out the gate.My autumn lotus sword shines all the way to the stars. The style (cho) is pure (ch’ŏng) and the expressions (ŏ) are heroic (chang). When Hong went to Beijing as Vice-Envoy (pusa), the senior envoy at the time was Minister Yi Sebaek 李世白 (1635–1703) and Literary Secretary (sŏjanggwan) was Third Inspector (changnyŏng) Ch’oe Kyeong 崔啟翁 (b. 1654). A couplet in Hong’s poem reads, White clouds.A young scholar Hao.Blue ox. Purple aura.An old man Dan.A couplet in his farewell poem for seeing off his companion Cho Taesu 趙大壽 (1655–1721) to Yonggang reads, 仙鳧影落黃龍國沙鳥盟寒白馬江 The shadows of fairy ducks fall on the Yellow Dragon Kingdom.Beach birds flock in the coldat the White Horse River. Hong always focused on writing good parallelism, therefore, at times could not avoid shortcomings (cha). But the two couplets are refined (chŏng) and delightful (kahŭi).
