丙辰春。洪叔范得禹在務安謫所。余次東里李判書殷相韻以寄曰。夢裡相逢不是真。春風一會更何因。遙憐南海竹間月。來照東城花下人。 聞道殊方乃哭子。想應佳節倍思親。他年倘遂同歸約。村北村西杖履頻。及叔范放還謂余曰。夢到京城與君相會見。君手題一律贈我。既覺記誦首句及第三聯。了然在心。第二聯及末句不記矣。俄得君所寄首句三 聯。與夢中所見不錯一字。乃是天下異事云。昔元白慈恩之夢。世稱神交感通。而此夢比古尤異。可見交情相感之理不偶然矣。
In the spring of the pyŏngjin year (1676), Hong Tŭgu 洪得禹 (1641–1700; styled Sukpŏm) was in exile in Muan, Chŏlla province. I wrote a poem matching the rhyme of Minister (p’ansŏ) Yi Ŭnsang’s (sobriquet Tongni [East Village]) poem and sent the poem to Hong. 夢裏相逢不是真春風一會更何因遙憐南海竹間月來照東城花下人聞道殊方仍哭子想應佳節倍思親他年倘遂同歸約村北村西杖履頻 A meeting in a dreamwas not real.But a meeting in a spring breeze,what could it mean?From faraway I think about the South Seaand the moon amid the bambooshining above the eastern wallon the man by the flowers.I hear at another placeyou are mourning the death of a child.On a holiday, you must longdoubly for your kin.Another year, if we can still keep the promise to return home together,to the north and west of the village,we will visit each other often with a cane. After his release and return, Hong told me, “I had a dream about going to the capital and meeting you. In the dream, you wrote a regulated verse and gave it to me. When I woke up, I could still remember the first line and the third couplet by heart but could not remember the second couplet and the last line. Then I received the poem you sent me, and its first line and the third couplet were exactly the same as what I had seen in the poem without an error. This is a strange event.” In the past, the world said Yuan Zhen and Bai Juyi’s dream of kind favor was due to spiritual communication. But this dream is even stranger than their dreams. This shows that mutual inspirations caused by friendship are not coincidental.
