余於丙午間趨庭於公州監營。任公輔相元以儀曹郎奉命過公。為余留一日。與之酬唱。公輔先賦七律。頷聯押秋字。時五月。余次曰。鶯殘驛路柳迎雨。蠶老田家麥欲秋。公輔吟詠不已。連和四五篇。臨別曰。秋字一聯。當輸公一着。

During the year of pyŏngo (1666), I visited my father at the Magistrate’s Office in Kongju. Ch’ungch’ŏng province. Im Sangwŏn 任相元 (1638–1697; styled Kongbo), an official in the Ministry of Rite (Ŭijo), was visiting my father under orders. I stayed there for a day and exchanged poems with him. He first composed a seven-character regulated verse with the rhyme word “autumn” 秋 in the second couplet. It was the fifth month at the time, and I responded with a matching rhyme and wrote, 鶯殘驛路柳迎雨蠶老田家麥欲秋 Orioles linger along the station road.Willows welcome the rain.Silkworms grow old at the farm. The barley is about ready for autumn.Im could not stop reciting the lines. We continued to exchange four or five poems. At parting, he said, “I must let you win for the couplet with the rhyme word ‘autumn.’”
