或問澤堂曰。公詩七律中。何篇為第一。公答曰。忠州東樓之作似是最優。其詩曰岹嶢飛閣郡城隈。俯視中州氣壯哉。山鎮東南尊月岳。水趨西北抱琴台。乾坤縱目青春動。今古傷心白髮催。已覺元龍豪氣盡。明朝投劾可歸來。以余觀乎公集。此篇雖佳。猶不若解職歸峽之什。其詩曰。東門朝旭照歸鞍。草露微收路正乾。三角雲煙迷曉望。五陵松柏動秋寒。江湖憂樂行藏數。宇宙君臣契會難。遙想釣臺沙水凈。不妨相照舊心肝。典重雅健。恐當壓卷。未知公何以捨此而取彼也。
Someone asked Yi Sik, “Among your seven-character regulated poems, which one is the best?” Yi answered “East Tower of Ch’ungju 題忠州東樓 seems to be the most exceptional (u) one.” 岧嶤飛閣郡城隈俯視中州氣壯哉山鎮東南尊月岳水趨西北抱琴台乾坤縱目靑春動今古傷心白發催已覺元龍豪氣盡明朝投劾可歸來 The towering villa rises highat the city gate’s corner.Looking down at Ch’ungju,how great is its vigor!Mountains pressing down to the east and southare more reverent than Moon Mountain.Rivers running to the west and northencircle the Zither Platform.To Heaven and Earth, I stretch my eyes.Verdant spring is stirring.Both past and present, a broken hearthastens white hair.I’m well aware Yuanlong’sheroic spirit has run out.Tomorrow morn, after handing in my resignation letter,I will be able to return home. When I read his collected writings, although this poem is excellent (ka), I found that it is still not as good as his other poem “Dismissed from Office and Returning to the Gorge” 解職歸峽, 東門朝旭照歸鞍草露微收路正干三角雲煙迷曉望五陵松柏動秋寒江湖憂樂行藏數宇宙君臣契會難遙想釣台沙水淨不妨相照舊心肝 At the East Gate, the morning sunilluminates my return saddle.The dews on the grass are faintly fading,the road is just about dry.Misty clouds of Three Peaks Mountainblur the morning view.Pines and cedars of Five Mausoleumsmove in the chilly autumn. Over rivers and lakes, gloomy and joyful,the ways are many.In Heaven and Earth, the king and officialsare difficult to reunite.I recall Angling Platformand the clear Sha River.It will be fine to reflect onthis old heart of mine. Refined and weighty (chŏnjung), elegant and robust (agŏn), I must say this is the poem that outshines all. I do not understand why Yi chose that poem over this one.
