(1662–1708) writing was rich and bountiful (pusŏm). As an Inspector (t’aegwan), he dared to speak his mind without reservation, and people called him upright and candid. But he also provoked much hatred and grudge, and as a result experienced calamity. In prison he wrote the following regulated verse, For ten years, I was covered in the shower of rain and dew. Eating the king’s peach and riding the royal carriage, these faults I’ve perhaps committed. Great is your servant’s offense. What is the benefit of staying alive!Profound is the favor of the sage-king.He has also delayed my death.I’ve already desecrated my long-cherished will,my plan of loyalty and filial piety.I only have secret grievanceswhich the ghosts and spirits know.Night after night, behind the prison gates,I drift about in dreams, half the time in my mother’s room, the other half on the jade staircase. The meaning is earnest and anguished. Eventually, he died in prison, and people grieved at the news of his death.
