Minister (p’ansŏ) Nam Yongik had a nimble and quick (minsok) poetic talent. He was also good at matching difficult rhymes. One day when he went to visit Chief State Councilor (yŏnggŭijŏng) Yi Kyŏngsŏk 李景奭 (1595–1671; sobriquet Paekhŏn [White Terrace]), Yi pointed at a water dropper and chose the rhyme words and made him write a poem. Immediately Nam responded verbally following the rhyme words. Made by a rivulet and handed downthrough the Zhou and the Qin,you swallow and spurt limpid wavesfrom the two hollows.Formed like a jade mountain, you store water in your heart. Who understands your wisdom?Who understands your humaneness? Yi greatly praised the poem.
