翰林安名世九歲時。以杜鵑花插硯滴。其父命賦詩。即成一絕曰。杜鵑花一萼。來自碧山中。硯滴生涯寄。他鄉旅客同。父見之而泣。蓋知其意趣凄苦。殊非遠達之象故也。後果妙年登第。官至翰林。以史冊書殯側殺三大臣被禍。
When Academician (hallim) An Myŏngse 安名世 (1518–1548) was nine years old, his father ordered him to compose a poem on the topic “azalea flowers in a water dropper.” Immediately, An composed the following quatrain, 杜鵑花一萼來自碧山中硯滴生涯寄他鄉旅客同 A blossom of azaleacomes from a green mountain. On the water dropper I entrust my lifeeven as a traveler in a foreign town. His father read it and wept, perhaps because he realized the poem was miserable and bitter (ch’ŏgo) in its meaning and charm (ŭich’wi) and had the vision of a short-cut career. At young age, An passed the civil service examination. When he reached the position of Academician, he was met with a disaster after recording in the official history: “The king put to death three high officials next to King Injong’s temporary coffin shelter.”
