李參判瑞雨悼亡後記夢詩曰。玉貌依稀看忽無。覺來燈影十分孤。早知秋雨驚人夢。不向窓前種碧梧。此作雖佳。而終不若申東淮翊聖悼亡詩。殘燈明滅伴羈魂。遠遠雞聲起別村。試拓東窗看夜色。曉山如夢月留痕。景象宛在目前。
Minister (p’ansŏ) Yi Sŏu’s poem “Recording a Dream after Wife’s Death” 悼亡後記夢 reads, 玉貌依稀看忽無覺來燈影十分孤早知秋雨驚人夢不向窗前種碧梧 Your lovely face, blurry,I saw then suddenly gone.I wake up under the lamp’s shadow,feeling utterly forlorn.Had I known that autumn raincould startle people from their dreams,outside the window, I would not haveplanted a sapphire beech tree. Although it is excellent, it is certainly not as good as Sin Iksŏng’s 申翊聖 (1588–1644; sobriquet Tonghoe kŏsa [Recluse of Tonghoe]) poem “Mourning My Wife” 悼亡, 殘燈明滅伴羈魂遠遠雞聲起別村試拓東窗看夜色曉山如夢月留痕 Under a dying lamp, flickering bright and dim,I accompany a lingering soul.From a distance, a rooster’s crowrises from another village.I try opening the east windowto see the night’s hues.Over the dawning mountain, like a dream,the moon left its trace. The scenery (kyŏngsang) unfolds as if right before one’s eyes.
