Those who understand poetry choose the people based on their poems. Those who do not understand poetry choose the poems based on the poets’ fame. When I was young and not yet known, even when I wrote excellent (ka) poems, people did not value them. When I gained poetic reputation, even my not striking expressions (kyŏngŏ) have all received praises. This is truly laughable. At the time of Qing invasion, I wrote the following line, During the day, I always hear people weep in the fields. Even in dreams, I run from the Manchu army. After reciting it, Yi Sik told me, “Your poem really has Du Fu’s style (kyŏk). How many times have you read Du? You have aptitude for writing. Please continue your efforts.” At the time, I had just been reading Du Fu’s poems. Therefore, it can be said that Yi had discerning eyes. As for others who do not understand poetry, even if they praise your work, there is no reason to be happy. Even if they slander your work, it is not worth being angry.
