知詩者。以詩取人。不知詩者。以名取詩。余少也。名稱未著。雖有佳作。人不為貴。及得詩聲。雖非警語輒皆稱誦。良可笑也。余於丙子亂中。有。晝常聞野哭。夢亦避胡兵之句。澤堂咏歎。謂余曰。君詩極有杜格讀杜幾許耶。有文章局量。須勉之。時余方讀杜詩。若澤堂可謂有明鑑也。彼不知詩者。譽之不足喜也。毁之不足怒也
시를 아는 사람은 시로써 사람을 취하고 시를 모르는 사람은 명성으로써 시를 취한다. 내가 젊었을 때에는 명성이 아직 드러나지 않아서 비록 좋은 작품이 있어도 사람들이 귀하게 여기지 않았다. 시명을 얻은 뒤로는 비록 경구가 아니어도 모두 칭송하니 참으로 가소롭다. 내가 병자년의 호란 중에 "" 구절을 얻었다. 택당 이식이 읊조리고 감탄하며 나에게 말했다. "그대의 시에는 극히 두보의 격조가 있으니 두보의 시를 얼마나 읽었는가. 문장의 국량이 있으니 마땅히 힘써야 할 것이다." 그 때 내가 바야흐로 두시를 읽고 있었으니 이식과 같은 사람이야말로 밝은 거울이라 하겠다. 저 시를 모르는 자들이 칭찬한다 하여 기뻐할 것이 없고, 흠잡는다 하여 분노할 것이 없다.
Those who understand poetry choose the people based on their poems. Those who do not understand poetry choose the poems based on the poets’ fame. When I was young and not yet known, even when I wrote excellent (ka) poems, people did not value them. When I gained poetic reputation, even my not striking expressions (kyŏngŏ) have all received praises. This is truly laughable. At the time of Qing invasion, I wrote the following line, 晝常聞野哭夢亦避胡兵 During the day, I always hear people weep in the fields. Even in dreams, I run from the Manchu army.After reciting it, Yi Sik told me, “Your poem really has Du Fu’s style (kyŏk). How many times have you read Du? You have aptitude for writing. Please continue your efforts.” At the time, I had just been reading Du Fu’s poems. Therefore, it can be said that Yi had discerning eyes. As for others who do not understand poetry, even if they praise your work, there is no reason to be happy. Even if they slander your work, it is not worth being angry.
