Two prefects (t’aesu) of Yŏju and Ich’ŏn and a County Administrator (togu) of Kyŏngan had a gathering at Sillŭk Monastery by the Yŏ River. They wrote poems for enjoyment and chose “temple” 庵, “mountain mist” 嵐, and “pool” 潭 as rhyme words. A student happened to be there also. The deputy officials asked him, “Do you also know how to write poems?” The student replied, “Although I am inept, I dare not refuse.” Then he immediately composed a matching poem, A monastery of a thousand gates was reduced to a temple.A winter day’s dark clouds were turned into a mountain mist. The great frozen lake is covered in a fresh fall of snow. It sure looks like a level road, so why do you call it a pool? It is because the deputy officials’ poems described the great monastery as a temple, dark clouds as mountain mist, and the frozen river after a snow as a pool. That is why the student mocked the errors in their word choice. All deputy officials were greatly embarrassed and went away. Ah! There are people in the world who earned bystanders’ laughter after composing strained poems. How could there be only the two duty officers of Yŏju and Inch’ŏn?
