近者無詩。非無詩。詩之可者無有也。大抵。人不致力於古作者。徒事擧業。或工於科賦科詩。而全昧於古詩律。雖粗解綴句者。亦未脫科體。故如村鼓島笛。雜亂不堪聞。其可詩云乎哉。人傳一鄉士詩曰。唐虞勳業日蕭條。風雨乾坤久寂寥。春到碧山花鳥語。太平遺跡未全消。雖非唐格。擺脫科臼。章法渾成。惜乎。失其名而不傳於世也
근래에 시가 없다는 것은 정말로 시가 없다는 것이 아니라 시라고 할 만한 시가 없다는 것이다. 대개 사람들이 옛날의 시짓기에 힘쓰지 않고 오직 과거 공부에만 힘써서 혹 과부나 과시에는 공교로우면서도 고시율에는 전혀 어둡다. 비록 대략 구를 엮을 줄 아는 자라도 또한 과체를 벗어나지 못한다. 그러므로 시골 북과 섬 피리 같아서 잡다하고 산란하여 들을 수가 없으니 그것을 어찌 시라 하겠는가. 사람들이 전하는 어떤 향사의 시에, ""라 하였다. 비록 당시의 율격은 아니지만 과시의 틀을 벗어나 장법이 절로 이루어졌다. 애석하구나. 그 이름을 잃어 세상에 전하지 못하는 것이.
In recent times, we have seen no poems. It is not that no poems were written, but there has been none that can be called poems. It is mostly because people do not dedicate themselves like ancient writers. In vain they prepare for civil service examinations or put their skills to examination composition of rhapsodies and poems. But they are completely ignorant about ancient poetic meters (siyul). Even those who roughly understand how to compose ornate sentences still have not gotten rid of the examination style (ch’e). Therefore, their compositions are like a dissonance of village drums and island flutes that cannot be listened to. How can they be called poems? A poem by a rural scholar that has been circulated reads, 唐虞勛業日蕭條風雨乾坤久寂寥春到碧山花鳥語太平遺跡未全消 The meritorious achievements of Tang and Yu grow fewer day by day.Wind and rain, Heaven and Earth have been quiet for long.Spring comes to green mountains. Flowers and birds speak.The traces of Great Peace have not vanished for good. Although the poem is not Tang style (tanggyŏk), it broke away from set patterns and created a natural (honsŏng) composition. What a pity that the poet’s name was lost and could not be known in the world!
