明廟嘗得一圖。出示群臣。皆莫知其爲何圖也。湖陰鄭士龍進曰。此乃西湖圖也。遂以手指點曰。此靈隱寺也。此湧金門也。此東坡所築之堤也。此錢鏐之墟也。此趙碫知舍也。此林處士之所居也。歷歷若曾所目見。明廟以鞍具馬。立于庭。仍命侍臣作詩曰。有居魁者。以此鞍馬贈之。湖陰遂卽赴進一律詩曰。靈隱寺中鳴暮鍾。湧金門外夕陽舂。至今蟻垤封猶合。依舊靈胥怒尙洶。湖舫客歸花嶼瞑。蘇堤鶯擲柳陰濃。錢墟趙社俱無所。欲問孤山處士蹤。明廟覽而稱賞。諸臣閣筆。遂賜鞍馬。許筠評謂舂容奇重。說盡一部西湖志於五十六字中

명종이 일찍이 그림 하나를 얻어 군신들에게 보여주었는데 모두 그것이 무슨 그림인지 알지 못했다. 호음 정사룡이 나아가 말했다. "이것은 바로 서호도입니다." 이어 손으로 가리키며 말했다. "이것은 영은사이며 이것은 용금문이고, 이것은 동파 소식이 쌓은 제방이며 이것은 전류의 옛터입니다. 이것은 이것은 조하의 집이며 이곳은 처사 임포가 살던 곳입니다." 역력하여 마치 눈으로 보는 듯하였다. 명종이 안장과 말을 뜰에 세워 두고 신하들에게 명하여 시를 짓게 하며 말했다. "가장 잘 지은 자에게 안장과 말을 주겠다." 정사룡이 이에 즉시 나아가 율시 한 수를 지었다. "" 명종이 보고 칭찬하니 여러 신하들이 붓을 놓았고 마침내 안장과 말을 하사하였다. 허균이 평했다. "우아하고 기발하고 묵직하다. 서호지의 한 부를 오십육 자 안에 다 담아내었다."

King Myŏngjong 明宗 (1534–1567) once acquired a painting. He showed it to the officials, but none knew what the painting was about. Chŏng Saryong came forward and said, “This is a Painting of West Lake.” Then pointing with his finger, he said, “This is Lingyin Monastery, and this Yongjin Gate. This is the dike that Su Shi built, and this the ruins of Qian Liu’s 錢鏐 (852–932) palace. This is Zhao Gu’s residence, and this Recluse Lin Bu’s residence.” He described them vividly as if he had seen them with his eyes. The king brought in a saddled horse to the courtyard. He then ordered the attending officials to compose a poem, and said, “Whoever writes the best poem will be given this saddled horse.” Chŏng quickly submitted a regulated verse. 靈隱寺中鳴暮鐘湧金門外夕陽舂至今蟻垤封猶合依舊靈胥怒尙洶湖舫客歸花嶼暝蘇堤鶯擲柳陰濃錢墟趙社都無所却問孤山處士蹤 From Lingyin Monastery rings the evening bell.Outside Yongjin Gate lies the sunset mountain. To this day, this ant hill land is still harmonious.As before, when Wu Zixu’s spirit is in rage, the waves roar. On a lake skiff, the traveler returns to the dimming flower islet.Along Su Dike, orioles leap in the deep shades of willows.The ruins of Qian Palace and the house of Zhao are all nowhere to be found. Just ask Gu Mountain for the traces of the recluse. The king read and commended the poem, and all other officials dropped their brushes. Chŏng then was awarded the saddled horse. In his appraisal of the poem, Hŏ Kyun said, “The poem’s carefree elegance is exceptionally rich. It encapsulates the entire Xihu zhi 西湖志 (Records of West Lake) in fifty-six characters.”
