文章罕出於世者也。固不可易得。至於近世才士之佼佼者。亦且寥寥。良可歎也。洪元九錫箕。天才絕人。佳作不可勝記。又善押强韻。人有呼韻。則應聲而對。甞與友人同行。適見松樹上。有一鴉飛噪。友人以鴉為題。呼針衾心三字為韻。欲以窘元九。元九卽隨呼韻輒對曰。姑也休嗔慵不針。春愁多夢擁羅衾。爾能解說吾姑惡。正得深閨少婦心。友人吐舌歎賞。元九甞受業於張谿谷。谿谷曰。洪某之才。謂之文章。則軆制未備。只謂之才子。則渠必寃之。盖才士之雄者云。澤堂甞云。天章大才。人所難及。而鄭公德餘柳公汝一亦其匹也。德餘卽鄭玄谷百昌之字。汝一卽柳承旨道三之字也
문장이 세상에 드물게 나오는 것은 실로 쉽게 얻을 수 없어서이다. 근세에 이르러서는 재주 있는 선비들 중 뛰어난 자들도 또한 드무니 실로 탄식할 만하다. 원구 홍석기는 타고난 재주가 보통 사람보다 뛰어나 좋은 작품이 이루 기록할 수 없다. 또 강운을 압운하기를 잘하여 사람이 운자를 부르면 그에 응하여 대하곤 하였다. 일찍이 친구와 함께 길을 가다가 마침 소나무 위에 까마귀 한 마리가 날아와 우는 것을 보았다. 벗이 까마귀를 제목으로 삼아서 침금심(針衾心) 세 글자로 운을 부르니 홍석기를 곤란하게 하고자 함이었다. 홍석기가 즉시 부른 운자에 따라 곧바로 대답하였다. "" 친구가 혀를 내두르며 칭찬하였다. 홍석기가 일찍이 계곡 장유에게 수업하였는데, 장유가 말했다. "홍석기의 재주를 문장이라고 한다면 체제가 갖추어지지 않았다 하겠으나, 다만 재주있는 사람이라고만 한다면 그가 반드시 억울해할 것이다. 대개 재주있는 선비 중에서도 뛰어난 사람이라 하겠다." 택당 이식이 일찍이 말했다. "천장(天章: 홍석기를 말하는 듯함.)의 큰 재주는 사람들이 미치기 어려워하는 것이나 정공 덕여와 유공 여일이 또한 필적할 만하다." 덕여는 곧 현곡 정백창의 자이고, 여일은 곧 승지 유도삼의 자이다.
Good literature rarely appears in the world, and therefore it is not easy to attain. It is truly regrettable that in recent times exceptionally talented scholars have also been very few. Hong Sŏkki (styled Wŏn’gu) is an extraordinary genius (ch’ŏnjae). His excellent (ka) poems are too many to mention. He was also good at matching difficult rhymes. When people chose rhymes, he instantly matched them verbally. He was traveling with a friend one day. Seeing a crow flying and cawing loudly above a pine tree, the friend chose “crow” as a topic and called out “to sew” 針, “quilt” 衾, and “heart” 心 as rhyme words, hoping to embarrass him. Hong matched the rhymes at once, 姑也休嗔慵不針春愁多夢擁羅衾爾能解說吾姑惡正得深閨少婦心 Mother-in-law! Please stop rebuking me for being too lazy to sew.Under spring blues, I have many dreams, cuddled in my gauze quilt.Can you, O crow, tell my mother-in-law that she is being harsh?To understand my heart, a young wife in her chamber?Stunned, his friend gasped in admiration. Hong once studied under Chang Yu who said, “Speaking of Hong’s talent, his literary style has not yet been perfected. But if you say he is just a gifted person, that will be doing injustice to him. I would say that he is an outstanding one among gifted people.” Yi Sik once said, “Hong has great literary talent that is difficult to measure up to. But Chŏng Tŏgyŏ and Yu Yŏil were his equals.” Tŏgyŏ is Chŏng Paekch’ang’s 鄭百昌 (1588–1635) style name, and Yŏil, Royal Secretary (sŭngji) Yu Tosam’s style name.
