苔川金地粹。一號天台山人。嘗與太能相善。一日。太能至。金贈詩曰。黃葉水西村。蒼苔秋晻門。山僧冒雨至。夜坐講玄言。太能吟咏曰。首句近唐。三四涉宋。金使太能誦其所作。太能誦一絶曰。夜深霜氣重。天遠雁聲高。客宿西亭月。還山秋夢勞。金曰。爾詩四句。果皆唐。稱賞不已
Kim Chisu 金地粹 (1585–1639; sobriquet T’aech’ŏn [T’ae River]), whose one sobriquet was Tiantai Mountain Man, was a good friend of monk T’aenŭng 太能 (1562–1649) who was a skilled poet. One day, when T’aenŭng arrived, Kim presented him a poem which reads, 黃葉水西村蒼苔秋掩門山僧冒雨至夜坐講玄言 Yellow leaves are covering Susŏ Village.On an autumn day, I close the mossy gate.Braving the rain, a mountain monk arrives.Sitting at night, he expounds profound words.After reading it, T’aenŭng said, “The first line is close to Tang (kŭndang), but the third and fourth lines surpass Song.” Kim asked T’aenŭng to recite his own poem, then T’aenŭng read a quatrain, 夜深霜氣重天遠雁聲高客宿西亭月還山秋夢勞 Deep in the night, frosty air hangs heavy.In the distant sky, calls of geese ring high.The traveler stays in the West Pavilion under the moonand returns to mountains, weary from autumn dream. Kim said, “All four lines of your poem are surely Tang.” He could not stop praising the poem.
