On the road to Kyŏngsang province, Recluse Ŏ Mujŏk arrived at Choryŏng (Bird Hill). It was noon, so Ŏ unsaddled and rested under a tree. A traveler in tattered clothes on a scrawny horse also arrived there. Ŏ thought lightly of him and treated him with disrespect. At that time autumn scenery was especially beautiful. Ŏ tried hard to find a good poetic phrase but could not get one even after a long time. The traveler said, “I am crude in writing poetry, may I please have paper and brush? I want to try whirling an axe like the carpenter of Ying.” He wrote the poem down and presented to Ŏ. The poem said, 秋風黃葉落紛紛主屹山高半沒雲二十四橋嗚咽水一年三度客中聞 In the autumn wind, yellow leaves fall everywhere. The Chuhŭl Mountain stands tall, its top half immersed in clouds.Twenty-four bridges, weeping waters, three times a year I listen to on my journey. When Ŏ read it, he was greatly surprised and put the brush down and left. That person probably was Yi Hyoch’ik 李孝則 (15th century) of Hyŏnp’ung county. The ancient saying “When judging a horse, it’s a mistake to leave out a slim one. When judging a person, it’s a mistake to leave out a poor man.” speaks of such a situation.
