(1631–1690) and Royal Secretary Im Pang both had poetic talents. A couplet in Cho’s poem “Singing Snow” 詠雪 reads, 馬蹄凍踏銀杯路鶯語寒喑玉樹春 Horses’ hooves make frozen steps along Silver Cup Road. Orioles’ calls break cold silence on the jade tree in spring. A couplet in Im’s poem “Kongbuk Tower” 供北樓 reads, 春如棄我無情去詩為逢君得意題 Spring, as if deserting, left me heartlessly.A poem, in case of meeting you, I write gleefully. People consider these couplets to be excellent (ka). But the phrasing (choŏ) in the first couplet’s “orioles’ calls break cold silence” is strained (kyŏn’gang) and not composed (mian).
