宣廟丙戌謁聖。五山車天輅。以四館爲擧子吕繼先代述。事覺杖竄北裔。及北兵使辭朝。上招差備門外敎曰。車天輅。雖以罪披謫。予嘗愛其才。爾可善視之。兵使赴任。待天輅極款。天輅恠問之。兵使曰。辭朝之日。自上有善視之命。安敢不爾。天輅聞之感泣。未久放還。宣廟愛惜人才之盛意。吁。其至矣。唐天使朱之蕃。嘗奉使我國歸時。以東方事實。回奏于皇帝。其中一款曰。朝鮮有車天輅者。文章奇壯。嘗謫北闕。有詩一句曰。風外怒聲聞渤海。雪中愁色見陰山。云云。其見重於中國。亦至於此。戊午年間。許筠赴京師。有一星官曰。靑丘分野。奎星晦彩。當有一文章亡。筠欲自死以當之。及渡鴨綠江。聞天輅死。愕然自失云
In the pyŏngsin year of the reign of King Sŏnjong (1577), at the Royal Visitation Examination (alsŏngsi), candidate Yŏ Kyesŏn 呂繼先 (16th century) submitted a composition that Examination Official (sagwan) Ch’a Ch’ŏllo had written on his behalf. When the truth was revealed, Ch’a was flogged and exiled to the northern frontier. When a military commander of the northern frontier was leaving the court, the king beckoned him outside the palatial gate and said, “Although Ch’a Ch’ŏllo is in exile because of his wrongdoing, I have long adored his talent. So please take good care of him.” When the commander took office, he treated Ch’a with utmost cordiality. When bewildered Ch’a inquired him, the commander replied, “The king has ordered me to treat you well. So how dare I disobey?” Hearing his words, Ch’a was moved to tears. Not long after that, Ch’a was released and returned. Such was the extent of Sŏnjong’s great appreciation of Ch’a’s talent. The imperial envoy Zhu Zhifan once visited our country and upon his return reported what he had done in Chosŏn to the emperor. A section in his report said, “Chosŏn has a man named Ch’a Ch’ŏllo whose writing is unique and robust. A line in the poem he wrote during his exile in the north reads, 風外怒聲聞渤海雪中愁色見陰山 Beyond the winds, the raging soundof the Bohai Sea I hear.In the snow, the gloomy colorsof the Yin Mountains I see.” This shows that even in China he was valued. In the muo year (1618), when Hŏ Kyun was in Beijing, an astronomical official (xing guan) said, “In the land under the Star of Green Hill, the Star of Literature is dimming. A great literary master must be dying.” Hŏ thought that it must be alluding to his own death. When Hŏ crossed the Amnok River and heard that Ch’a had died, he was startled and humbled.
