Once while at his friend Yi Sik’s 李植 (1584–1647; sobriquet T’aektang [Favor Hall]) house drinking and discussing poetry, Yi Myŏnghan recited his poem, 滿載人間酒懸帆大海中長風九萬里直到廣寒宮 Carrying all the wine in the mortal world,I raise my sail in the great sea.Riding the long wind, I travel ninety thousand li,all the way to the Moon Palace. thinking that they were powerful words. Yi Sik commented, “These are children’s words that mature Confucian scholars do not speak.” Yi Myŏnghan was disappointed. At the time, potted chrysanthemums in Yi Sik’s house were in full bloom. Yi Myŏnghan then recited the following poem, A storm had visited your house. The rain has now cleared, and the sun is going down in the mountain. This year, autumn colors are early.Only the eighth month, yet yellow chrysanthemums are already here.Yi Sik read it a few times and said, “Celestial writing surely inspires me.” Celestial Writing (Ch’ŏnjang) is Yi Myŏnghan’s style name.
