太官洪萬宗。早病廢讀。不能專工。而從東溟鄭君平學。故其詩薰芳染彩。格調淸峻。採蓮曲詩曰。彼美採蓮女。繫舟橫塘渚。羞見馬上郎。笑人荷花去。君平見之曰。此盛唐語也。吾當傳衣鉢於汝也。余每喜其水鍾寺詩。蕭寺白雲上。秋江明月西。禪樓無夢寐。風露夜凄凄。天然超絕。得唐人景趣。洪甞謂余曰。使吾讀書若尊丈。則豈如今日之碌碌乎。盖恨其不能多讀。而雖使多讀者。賦之。亦安能做此語麼
태관 홍만종은 일찍이 병으로 독서를 폐하여 전문적으로 시에 공을 들이지 못하였으나 동명 군평 정두경에게 배웠다. 그러므로 그 시는 향기가 배고 색채로 물들었으며 격조가 청준하였다. 그의 채련곡 시에, ""라 하였다. 정두경이 이를 보고 말했다. "이는 성당의 말이니, 내가 마땅히 의발을 그대에게 전하겠다." 나는 늘 그의 수종사 시를 좋아하였다. "" 자연스럽게 이루어진 것이 매우 뛰어나서 당인의 경취를 얻었다. 홍만종이 일찍이 나에게 말했다. "만약 내가 어르신처럼 독서를 하였다면 어찌 지금처럼 변변치 않겠습니까." 대개 자신이 많이 읽지 못한 것을 한탄한 것인데, 비록 많이 읽은 사람이 시를 짓는다 하여도 어찌 능히 이런 말을 지어내겠는가.
Hong Manjong, who served as an emissary to China, became ill early, neglected his study, and could not concentrate on developing his poetic skills. He studied under Chŏng Tugyŏng, hence his poems were fumed with fragrance (hunbang) and tinted with colors (yŏmch’ae), and his style (kyŏkcho) was clear and vigorous (ch’ŏngjun). His poem “Lotus Picking Song” 采蓮曲 reads, 彼美采蓮女系舟橫溏渚羞見馬上郎笑入荷花去 There, a beautiful lass picking the lotus moors the boat along the waterside.Shy to see a lad on horseback,smiling, she disappears amid the flowers. After reading the poem, Chŏng said, “These are High Tang expressions. I shall pass on my robe and alms bowl to you.” I always liked Hong’s poem “Sujong Monastery” 水鐘寺, 蕭寺白雲上秋江明月西禪樓無夢寐風露夜凄凄 A monastery stands above the white clouds.On the autumn river shines a bright moon in the west.At the meditation hall, I am sleepless.Gusts and dews, the night is chilly. Natural (ch’ŏnyŏn) and exceptional (ch’ojŏl), the poem has a Tang poet’s scenery and charm (kyŏngch’wi). Hong once told me, “Had I read books like you, I would not be so mediocre today!” He regretted not having read much. But even if someone who is well-read were to write a poem, will that person be able to write these words?
