Lately among youths, Kim Sŏkchu 金錫胄 (1634–1684; style name Sabaek) earned an early literary fame. Yet his malady was in strenuousness (sap). Even when he wrote just a few lines, he mulled over them painstakingly and did not present the poem without going through three to four drafts. His poems were generally well embellished (chohoe), but his eight poems written in response to Hong Manjong (styled Uhae) were particularly beautiful (ka). The first of the eight poems reads, Spring sun is fair. Spring air is mild.An old friend’s visit, how wonderful it will be?Ten years in the capital, I’ve earned a youthful fame.In an April garden, a desire for reclusion grows.Dancing with willows, visiting the flowers, I find my true self. Rushing my carriage, dashing my horse, I run to him.A new poem I send him. How difficult it is to see each other! The birds call one another––chirp, chirp––from different boughs. It is superbly plain and simple (p’yŏngdam), verging on antiquity (kŭn’go). I once read Kim’s discussion on literature. In it he wrote, “When I was young, I did not read much, therefore, I have not been able to sprint forward in my literary skill. Although I wish to make effort to read and cure my maladies, I had too much work and no free time. I truly regret it.” He said these words perhaps because he relied on his ability to imitate ancient works to write what he had written, without a great fountain [of knowledge] from which water could spring out. Yet such ingenious ideas (myohae), method of composition (chakpŏp), and complete mastery of each style (ch’e) are truly not difficult to attain.
