As a Diplomatic Administrative Attendant without a rank (paegŭi chongsagwan) Kwŏn P’il accompanied Welcoming Official (wŏnjŏngsa) Yi Chŏnggwi to the western provinces, and they were in great accord. Later, before leaving the capital to return to Kanghwa, Kwŏn went to bid farewell to Yi. The sun was going down at the time, and Yi Chŏnggwi clutched a candle and called for wine. Yi Chŏnggwi had Yi Myŏnghan 李明漢 (1595–1645; sobriquet Paekchu [White Islet]), who was by his side, to choose the rhymes and asked Kwŏn to write a poem. Kwŏn said he was in a hurry, but Yi Chŏnggwi insisted. Yi Myŏnghan then chose “dusk” 昏 as a rhyme word. In the cold sky, silvery candlelight illumes the dusk. Myŏnghan again chose “gate” 門 as a rhyme word. A bell tolls, and the fortified city is about to close the gate. Wishing to embarrass Kwŏn, Myŏnghan chose “monk” 髡 as a rhyme word. Then Kwŏn responded at once, With special courtesy you have treated me, shaming the phrase “Start with Guo Wei.” Clear wine, what happiness! Is it for having Chunyu Kun to stay? Kwŏn again responded to a chosen rhyme, My gratitude can never repay your lofty righteousness.I can only linger around and offer you my words. For the last line, Myŏnghan chose “to discuss” 論 as a rhyme word. Waving his sleeves, Kwŏn said, “The last line will be widely known.” Then he loudly recited, Under the bright moon, a lonely boat sails the vast waters.White-haired, no more sorrows. What else is there for me to discuss? He finished the poem and left. Yi Chŏnggwi was deeply impressed by Kwŏn, and told everyone he met that Kwŏn had matchless talents.
