魚無迹字潛夫。以孽産拘國禁未第。甚有才名。少時隨其父公曉過僧寺。見山出雲命聯。卽應曰。靑山敬客地。頭戴白雲冠。及長有新曆歎。蒼生難等諸篇。頗膾矣。有過吉注書金烏山詩曰。落落高標吉注書。金烏山下閉門居。首陽薇蕨殷遺草。栗里田園晋故墟。千載名垂扶大義。至今人過式前庐。生爲男子誰無瞻。立立峰巒摠起予。余嘗親過金烏。此詩第二聯。刻在閭表之楣矣。

Korean Translation

어무적(魚無迹)은 자는 잠부(潛夫)인데, 서자이기 때문에 국법에 구애되어 과거를 보지 못하였으나 대단히 재주 있다는 이름이 있었다. 그는 어렸을 때 그 아버지를 따라 새벽에 절을 지나게 되었다. 산에서 구름이 나오는 것을 보고 연구를 지어 보라고 하였더니, 바로 푸른 산이 오는 손님 공경하여 / 靑山敬客至 머리에 백운관을 썼다 / 頭戴白雲冠 라고 하였다. 그가 장성함에 미쳐서는 〈신력탄(新曆歎)〉ㆍ〈창생난(蒼生難)〉등 여러 편을 지어 자못 널리 사람의 입에 오르내린다. ‘길주서의 금오산을 지나다[過吉注書金烏山]’라는 글제로 다음과 같이 시를 지었다. 낙락히 지취 높은 길주서가 / 落落高標吉注書 금오산 아래서 문 닫고 살았다네 / 金烏山下閉門居 수양산 고사리는 은 나라가 남긴 풀이요 / 首陽薇蕨殷遺草 율리의 전원은 진 나라의 옛 터네 / 栗里田園晉故墟 천년을 이름이 남아 대의를 부지하니 / 千載名垂扶大義 지금도 지나는 사람 집앞에서 머리 숙이네 / 至今人過式前廬 사내로 생겨나 비록 담력 없지만 / 生爲男子雖無膽 우뚝 솟은 봉우리들 날 고무시키네 / 立立峯巒摠起余 내가 일찍이 금오산을 지나다 보니, 이 시의 둘째 연구가 정문 바깥 도리에 조각되어 있었다.

English Translation

Ŏ Mujŏk’s style name was Chambu (Hermit). As a sŏja, he could not take the civil service examination due to state restrictions, but he acquired great fame for his talent. When he was young, one early morning, he and his father passed by a Buddhist temple. Seeing the clouds rising from the mountains, his father asked him to compose a couplet. Ŏ immediately replied, 靑山敬客至頭戴白雲冠 Green mountains show respect to the arriving guestsby putting on white-cloud crowns.The poems he wrote as an adult, such as “Lamenting the New Calendar” 新曆歎and “Commoners’ Lives Are Difficult” 蒼生難, are truly savory (hoe). His poem on passing Kil Chae’s Shrine in Kŭmo Mountain reads, 落落高標吉注書金烏山下閉門居首陽薇蕨殷遺草栗里田園晉故墟千載名垂扶大義至今人過式前廬生爲男子雖無膽立立峰巒摠起余 Graceful and outstanding, Royal Recorder Kil Chaelived at the foot of Kŭmo Mountain,secluded behind a closed door.The ferns of Shouyang Mountain are the grasses of the Shang remnants.The garden of Chestnut Village is an ancient place from the Jin.Your name will be passed down for a thousand years in support of righteous causes.Even now, passersby bow before your hut.Born a man, yet I am without valor.The towering ridges and peaks always raise me up. Once I passed by Kŭmo Mountain and saw the second couplet of this poem inscribed on the crossbeam of the village gate.
