When Minister Yi Haeng was young, at a Chief Minister’s house, he witnessed a senior official who was asked to compose a poem on a screen depicting mottled bamboo but could not do it after much struggle. Yi then first wrote the following quatrain, Drip, drop goes the Xiang River bank.Swish, swoosh goes the mottled bamboo forest. What is difficult to paint in their midstis the heart of the two consorts on that day. All gasped in admiration. Realizing that even a poem by a senior official would not be as good as Yi Haeng’s, they continued and matched the poem. |
