申企齋相公。嘗晝寢。因驟雨過盆荷而覺。得夢凉荷瀉雨一句。數年未得眞對。因成一律。而草藁中空其行。必欲覓奇對以充。見朴斯文蘭語及之。朴以衣濕石生雲告。企齋曰。非也。至於終身。未得其偶云。詩人覓句之勤如此。

Korean Translation
신영성 기재 상공(申靈城企齋相公 이름은 광한(光漢))은 한번은 낮잠자다가 소나기가 화분에 심어 놓은 연[荷]에 지나는 것을 듣고 깨어서, 꿈은 연잎에 쏟아지는 비에 서늘하고 / 夢涼荷寫雨 라는 시 한 귀를 얻고 수년 동안 알맞은 대구를 채우지 못하여, 인하여 근률(近律)을 지을 때에 있어서도 그 줄을 비워두고 기필코 기묘한 대구를 얻어 채우려고 하였다. 박사문 난(朴斯文蘭)을 만나 언급하였더니, 박난은, 옷은 돌에서 생기는 구름에 젖네 / 衣濕石生雲 라고 지어, 기재에게 고하였으나, 기재는 안 된다고 하여, 종신토록 그 짝을 얻지 못하였다 하니, 시인들의 시구를 찾는 부지런은 이러하였다.

English Translation

Once, while taking a nap, Minister Sin Kwanghan (sobriquet Kijae [Tiptoe Studio]) was awakened because of a downpour on the lotus basin. Then he composed the following line, 夢涼荷瀉雨 I felt cool in dream as the rain poured down on the lotus. For several years, he could not find a matching line. He went as far as to leave the line empty in the regulated verse, seeking to find a fine line to complete it. When he met scholar Pak Ran 朴蘭 (b. 1495) and talked to him about it, Pak composed, 衣濕石生雲 My robe was drenched when the rocks released clouds. When Pak suggested it to him, Sin responded, “That is not it.” Until the end of his life, Sin could not find the matching line. Such is the extent of a poet’s endeavor to search for the perfect line.
