成縣令孝元。夏山之姪也。十三四歲時。已能作詩賦。有名於世。竟未第而晩補蔭職。守龍仁。嘗於院樓。夢見所思。有詩曰。情裡佳人夢裡逢。相驚憔悴舊時容。覺來身在高樓上。風打空江月隱峰。時以爲絶唱。

Korean Translation
현령 성효원(成孝元)은 하산군(夏山君)의 조카다. 13~14세 때부터 병풍과 족자를 능히 썼고, 이미 시부(詩賦)를 잘 지을 줄 알아 한때에 유명하므로, 공경들이 다투어 초대하여 글씨 써주기를 청하였다. 그는 끝내 급제하지 못하고 만년에 음직으로 용인의 수령이 되어 선정을 베풀었다. 사람됨이 구속받지 않는 기남자(奇男子)이었다. 일찍이 원루에서 잠들었다가 꿈에 사모하던 사람을 보게 되어 이런 시를 지었다. 그리던 가인을 꿈속에 만나 / 情裏佳人夢裏近 옛 얼굴 초췌해진 것 서로 놀랐네 / 相驚憔悴舊形容 깨어보니 몸은 높은 누대 위에 누웠는데 / 覺來身在高樓上 바람은 긴 강을 치고 달은 봉우리에 숨었네 / 風打長江月隱峯 당시에 절창이라고 하였다.

English Translation

Magistrate Sŏng Hyowŏn 成孝元 (1497–1551) was the nephew of Sŏng Mongjŏng, Prince of Hasan. At the age of thirteen or fourteen, Sŏng Hyowŏn was already known for his poetry and rhapsodies, but he could not pass the civil service examination. In late years, he filled a vacancy as a privileged descendent and became a magistrate of Yongin, Kyŏnggi province. Once while at a tower in a courtyard, he had a dream about the woman he longed for and wrote the following poem, 情裏佳人夢裏近相驚憔悴舊形容覺來身在高樓上風打空江月隱峰 The fair lady of my heart,I met her again in a dream.We were surprised how pined awayour old countenances became.Waking up, I find myself at a high tower.The wind beats the cold river. The moon hides behind the peak.Contemporaries regarded it as a poetic masterpiece (chŏlch’ang).
