高麗忠宣王久留元。有所鍾情者。及東還。情人追來。王折蓮花一朶。贈之以爲別。日夕王不勝眷戀。令益齋更往見之。益齋往則女在樓中。不食已數日。言語不能辨。强操筆書一絶云。贈送蓮花片。初來的的紅。辭枝今畿日。憔悴與人同。益齋回啓云。女人酒家。與年少飮酒。尋之不得耳。王大懊唾地。翌年慶壽節。益齋進爵退伏庭下。言死罪。王問之。益齋呈其詩。道其事。王垂淚曰。當日若見詩。竭死力還往矣。卿愛我。故變言之。眞忠懇也。

Korean Translation

충선왕(忠宣王)은 오랫동안 원 나라에 머물고 있어서 정든 사람이 있었더니, 귀국하게 되자 정인(情人)이 쫓아오므로 임금이 연꽃 한 송이를 꺾어주고 이별의 정표로 하였다. 밤낮으로 임금이 그리움을 견디지 못하여 익재(益齋)를 시켜 다시 가서 보게 하였다. 이익재가 가보니 여자는 다락 속에 있었는데, 며칠 동안 먹지를 않아 말도 잘 하지 못하였으나 억지로 붓을 들어 절구 한 수를 쓰는데, 보내주신 연꽃 한 송이 / 贈送蓮花片 처음엔 분명하게도 붉더니 / 初來的的紅 가지 떠난 지 이제 며칠 / 辭枝今幾日 사람과 함께 시들었네 / 憔悴與人同 하였다. 익재가 돌아와서, “여자는 술집으로 들어가 젊은 사람들과 술을 마신다는데 찾아도 없습니다.”고 아뢰니, 임금이 크게 뉘우치며 땅에 침을 뱉었다. 다음해의 경수절(慶壽節 왕의 생일)에 이익재가 술잔을 올리고는 뜰아래로 물러나와 엎드리며, “죽을 죄를 지었습니다.” 하니, 임금이 그 연유를 물으므로 이익재는 그 시를 올리고 그때 일을 말했다. 임금은 눈물을 흘리며, “만약 그날 이 시를 보았더라면 죽을 힘을 다해서라도 돌아갔을 것인데, 경이 나를 사랑하여 일부러 다른 말을 하였으니, 참으로 충성스러운 일이다.” 하였다.

English Translation

King Ch’ungsŏn 忠宣王 (1275–1325) of Koryŏ spent a significant amount of time in Yuan. He had a woman there he deeply loved. When the time came for his return, she followed him. As a token of parting, the king picked a lotus flower and gave it to her. Day and night, he couldn't help but miss her. He then ordered Yi Chehyŏn (sobriquet Ikchae [Benefit Studio]) to visit her. Yi discovered the woman in a tower, weak from days of not eating and with unclear speech. Despite her condition, she forced herself to hold a brush and wrote a quatrain, 贈送蓮花片初來的的紅辭枝今幾日憔悴與人同 The lotus flower you gave me,it shone pink at first.In a few days since our parting,it and I have wilted alike. Yi returned and reported to the king saying, “The woman has joined a tavern where she drinks with young men. I tried to find her but couldn’t.” Deeply shaken, the king spat on the ground. On the king’s birthday the following year, after offering the king a cup of celebratory wine, Yi prostrated himself in the courtyard and confessed that he had committed a grave crime. When the king inquired about it, Yi presented the poem and recounted what had transpired. With tears in his eyes, the king said, “Had I seen that poem on that day, I would have exhausted all my strength to return to her. You changed the story because you care for me. You are a truly loyal subject.”
