Yŏng T’ae 永泰 (15th century), Koryŏ’s Gentleman for Ceremonial Service (changsarang), was skilled in theatrical plays. When King Ch’unghye 忠惠王 (1315–1344) went hunting, Yŏng T’ae always accompanied him and performed theatrical plays. During one of these occasions, the king threw him into the water. When Yŏng T’ae emerged from the water and shook himself off, the king burst into laughter and asked, “Where did you go and where are you coming from? Yŏng replied, “I went to have a visit with Qu Yuan.” The king inquired further, “What did Qu Yuan say?” Yŏng responded, “He said, ‘I threw myself in the river because I met a vacuous ruler. You have met an enlightened ruler. What brings you down here?’ The king was pleased with the response and bestowed an urn made of silver to Yŏng. A keeper of the royal garden who witnessed this incident nearby threw himself into the water as well. The king ordered someone to pull him out by his hair and personally asked for the reason behind his action. The keeper of the garden replied, “I also came back from a visit with Qu Yuan.” The king questioned, “What did Qu Yuan say?” The keeper of the garden answered, “Yŏng T’ae has already said everything. I can say whatever I can say.” All the military men present roared with laughter. |
