金文平文章雄渾。泛駕縱橫。專倣司馬子長之軌。擧世無與支吾。而其詩亦豪健。深得骨髓。然性不拘檢。押韻不正。故皆謂詩不如文。其實詩文兩贍也。擊甕圖詩云。甕中天地忽開豁。山川品物同昭蘇。沈中樞山村詩云。柴門不整臨溪岸。山雨朝朝看水生。龍宮軒題詩云。痛飮百杯樓上臥。捲簾南北是靑山。又題山寺詩云。窓虛僧結納。塔靜客題詩。此皆得意外之趣。非人所能及也。

Korean Translation

김문평(金文平)은 문장이 웅혼(雄渾)하고 종횡무진 누비고 다니며. 오로지 사마자장(司馬子長)의 궤범(軌範)을 모방하였는데, 온 세상에 맞설 만한 사람이 없었다. 그 시 또한 기상(氣像)이 높고 깊이 골수(骨髓)를 얻었다. 성품이 검속(檢束)할 줄을 모르고 압운(押韻)이 바르지 못하여 모두들 시(詩)가 문(文)보다 못하다고 하였으나 실상은 시나 문이나 모두 넉넉하였다.〈격옹도(擊瓮圖)〉라는 시에는, 독 속에 있는 천지가 갑자기 활짝 열리어 / 瓮中天地忽開豁 산천 품물이 한가지로 밝게 되살아나도다 / 山川品物同昭蘇 하고, 〈심중추산재(沈中樞山齋)〉라는 시에는, 삐딱한 사립문 시냇가 언덕에 면해 있어 / 紫門不整臨溪岸 산비가 아침마다 내려 물이 불어남을 보겠도다 / 山雨朝朝看水生 하고, 〈용궁헌제(龍宮軒題)〉라는 시에는, 마음껏 백배를 마시고 누상에 누워 / 痛飮百杯樓上臥 발을 걷으니 남북이 모두 청산이로다 / 捲簾南北是靑山 하였다. 또 산사(山寺)를 두고 시를 지었는데, 창은 비었는데 중은 장삼을 깁고 / 窓虛僧結衲 탑은 조용한데 객이 시를 짓도다 / 塔靜客題詩 하였으니, 이것은 모두 생각 너머의 정취를 얻은 것으로 보통 사람들이 미칠 수 있는 바가 아니다.

English Translation

Kim Suon’s writings were robust and simple (unghon). Unharnessed, he roamed freely. Modeled after Sima Qian’s works, his writing had no equal in the world. His poetry was also bold and robust (hogŏn), and profound (sim) in essence (kolsu). But by nature, he was nonconformist, and his rhymes were uneven. As a result, it is often said that his poetry was not as good as his prose. But the truth is that he excelled in both poetry and prose. His poem “The Painting of Sima Guang Breaking an Urn” 擊瓮圖 reads, 瓮中天地忽開豁山川品物同昭蘇 The Heaven and Earth inside the urn suddenly opened up.Mountains, rivers, and all thingssprang to life together. His poem “Deep Inside a Mountain Village” 沈中樞山村 reads, 柴門不整臨溪岸山雨朝朝看水生 My lopsided bramble gateoverlooks the stream bank.Mountain rains fall morning after morning,and I watch the waters rise. In addition, his poem “A Poem on the Dragon Palace Terrace” 龍宮軒題詩 reads, 痛飮百杯樓上臥捲簾南北是靑山 I gulp down a hundred gobletsand recline upstairs.Rolling up the blind, to the north and south, all are blue mountains. Also, his poem “Mountain Monastery” 題山寺 reads, 窓虛僧結衲塔靜客題詩 Behind the window lattice, a monk ties his robe.By the tranquil pagoda, a guest writes a poem. All these poems possess a charm (ch’wi) beyond meaning (ŭioe), which is something that ordinary humans cannot achieve.
