李公孟畇牧隱長。孫官至二相。承籍世業。有文名。尤長於詩。嘗作悲松都詩云。五百年來王氣終。操鷄搏鴨竟何功。英雄已逝山河在。人物南遷市井空。上苑鶯花微雨後。諸陵草樹夕陽中。我來此日偏多感。往事悠悠水自東。公又傷無子作詩云。自從人道起於寅。父子相傳到此身。我罪伊何天下管。末爲人父鬢絲新。其後夫人妬悍搆家禍。公因此得罪。流寓而卒。可歎。

Korean Translation

이맹균(李孟畇) 공은 목은(牧隱)의 장손으로서 벼슬이 이상(貳相)에 이르러 세업을 계승하였으며 문명(文名)이 있고, 더욱이 시에 능하였다. 일찍이 〈비송도(悲松都)〉라는 시를 지었는데, 그 시에, 5백년 내려온 왕기가 끊어지니 / 五百年來王氣終 닭을 잡고 오리를 잡았으나 마침내 무슨 공을 이루었냐 / 操鷄摶鴨竟何功 영웅은 이미 가고 산하만 의구한데 / 英雄已逝山河在 인물은 남쪽으로 옮겨갔으니 시정은 비었구나 / 人物南遷市井空 비원의 앵화는 이슬비 뒤에 피었고 / 上苑鶯花微雨後 여러 능의 풀과 나무가 저녁 놀에 비치는구나 / 諸陵草樹夕陽中 내가 이날 와서 보고 자못 느낌이 많으니 / 我來此日偏多感 지난 일은 유유한데 물은 스스로 동쪽으로 흘러가누나 / 往事悠悠水自東 하였다. 또 자식 없음을 근심하여 시를 지었는데, 인도가 인에서 일어남으로부터 / 自從人道起於寅 아비와 자식이 서로 이어져 이 몸에 이르렀도다 / 父子相傳到此身 내 죄 어떠하기에 하늘이 불쌍이 여기지 않아 / 我罪伊何天不弔 아직도 남의 아비가 되지 못하고 살쩍만 새롭도다 / 未爲人父鬢絲新 하였다. 그 뒤에 질투심이 많고 독살스러운 부인 때문에 집 안에 우환이 있었는데 공도 이 일로 인하여 죄를 얻어 마침내 귀양살이를 하다가 죽었다.

English Translation

Yi Maenggyun 李孟畇 (1371–1440) was the eldest son of Yi Saek 李穡 (1328–1396; sobriquet Mogŭn [Herdsman Recluse]). He served as the Fourth State Councilor (chwach’angsŏng) and carried on the work of his ancestors. He was also renowned for his literary skills, particular in poetry. One of his poems, “Lamenting the Capital Songdo” 悲松都詩 reads, 五百年來王氣終操鷄博鴨竟何功英雄已逝山河在人物南遷市井空上苑鶯花微雨後諸陵草樹夕陽中我來此日偏多感往事悠悠水自東 The five-hundred-year-old kingly aura has come to an end.The feat of establishing Koryŏ, what does it amount to in the end? Though heroes have departed,the mountains and rivers remain.People have moved to the south,and the marketplaces are empty.Orioles and flowers fill the royal gardenafter a light rain.Plants and trees cover the royal tombsunder the setting sun.Coming here today, feelings are many.The past lingers on,and the water flows from the east.He also wrote a poem expressing his sorrow of being childless. 自從人道起於寅父子相傳到此身我罪伊何天不管未爲人父鬢絲新 Since the beginning of humanity in the land of the northeast,from fathers to sons, the lineage has been passeddown to this body of mine.What fault have I committedthat Heaven pays no heed?I am still not a father, yet my hair is turning gray. Later, his wife’s jealousy turned violent and caused havoc on his family. Because of her crimes, Yi was eventually sent into exile and died. This is greatly regrettable.
