When Ch’oe Yŏng 崔瑩 (1316–1388), the Grand Prince of Ch’ŏrwŏn, was young, his father always admonished him, saying, “Treat gold as if it were mere rocks.” Ch’oe inscribed those words on his sash and faithfully wore them. Even when he gained political power and his authority extended throughout and beyond the court, he never misappropriated anything from others and was content with provisions alone. When King T’aejo 太祖 became Chief Minister (munha sijung), he once wrote in the opening line of a couplet, 三尺釖頭安社稷 With a three-foot blade sword, I bring peace to the Gods of the Land and Grain. None of the scholars present at the time could come up with a matching line, except for Ch’oe, who immediately responded, The tip of a whip, stabilizes Heaven and Earth. All those present gasped in admiration. |
