| 獨谷與騎牛李先生相好。一日往訪不遇。書于門柴曰。德彛不見太平年。八十逢春更謝天。桃李滿城香雨過。謫仙何處酒家眠。又於少時。趙侍中邀座主開讌。獨谷卽於席上作賀詩曰。得士方知座主賢。侍中獻壽侍中前。天敎好雨留歌客。風送飛花落舞筵。左右皆歎服。昌寧府院君聞而責之曰。士之忌才。甚於妬婦。汝何不讓。敢先賦之。其不思保身之術乎。當時叔季人多忌才相害。故其言及此。 |

| 독곡(獨谷)이 기우(騎牛) 이선생(李先生)과 친하였는데, 하루는 방문하였으나 만나지 못하였다. 문짝에 쓰기를,
덕이는 태평한 해를 보지 못했는데 / 德彝不見太平年 80에 또 봄을 만났으니 다시 하늘에 감사하도다 / 八十逢春更謝天 도리 꽃이 성에 가득하고 향우가 지나갔는데 / 桃李滿城香雨過 적선은 어떤 술집에서 자고 있는가 / 謫仙何處酒家眠 하였다. 또 어렸을 적에 조시중(趙侍中)이 좌주(座主)를 맞아 잔치를 하였다. 독곡이 그 자리에서 축하하는 시를 지었는데, 선비를 보면 바야흐로 좌주의 어짊을 아나니 / 得士方知座主賢 시중이 시중 앞에 헌수하도다 / 侍中獻壽侍中前 하늘이 좋은 비를 내려 가객을 머무르게 하고 / 天敎好雨留佳客 바람은 꽃잎을 날려 춤추며 연석에 떨어지게 하도다 / 風送飛花落舞筵 하여 좌우에 있는 사람이 모두 탄복하였다. 창녕부원군(昌寧府院君 성석용(成石容). 독곡의 형)이 듣고 책망하기를, “선비가 재주를 꺼림은 샘많은 계집을 싫어하는 것보다도 심하거늘 어찌하여 너는 사양하지 않고, 감히 먼저 시를 지어 몸가짐을 생각하지 않는가.” 하였다. 이것은 당시는 말세 사람들이 흔히 재주 있음을 시기하여 서로 해하는 까닭으로 이를 두고 한 말이다. |

| Sŏng Sŏngnin 成石璘 (1338–1423; sobriquet Tokkok [Solitary Valley]) and Yi Haeng were close friends. On a day when Sŏng visited Yi but couldn’t meet him, he left a poem on his friend’s door, 德彝不見太平年八十逢春更謝天桃李滿城香雨過謫仙何處酒家眠 Deyi did not get to see the time of Great Peace. At eighty, meeting another spring, I am all the more grateful to Heaven. Peach and plum blossoms fill the city.Scented rains have just passed.You, banished immortal!At which tavern did you fall asleep? When Sŏng was young, Chief Minister (sijung) Cho Chun 趙浚 (1346–1405) held a banquet to celebrate his appointment as the examiner of the civil service examinations. On the spot, Sŏng composed a celebratory poem, 得士方知座主賢侍中獻壽侍中前天敎好雨留佳客風送飛花落舞筵 When capable scholars are found, we know the exam officer is virtuous. I, a Chief Minister, offers birthday wishesto you, Oh, Chief Minister!Heaven rains down blessings upon these fine guests. The wind wafts petals to fall on the dance floor. Everyone gasped in admiration. However, after listening, Grand Prince of Ch’angnyŏng Sŏng Yŏwan 成汝完 (1309–1397) reproached Sŏng, saying, “Scholars’ jealousy for talent is worse than women’s jealousy. How come you did not yield and dared to present the poem first? Why not ponder the art of self-protection?” At the time, many young scholars jealous of others’ talent attacked each other, and that is why he thus remarked. |
