李廣城文章經術之才俱贍。常自稱國士。其品藻人物少許可。獨與伯氏爲刎頸交。廣城爲都承旨。伯氏爲右承旨。廣城愛一角妓。行蹤詭秘。伯氏尋知所往。作詩云。衙罷歸來日欲低。名花國士兩相携。誰家巷裡藏車駕。司醞東邊禮部西。潛以詩付于壁。廣城見之。裂取藏袖裡。自是尤以義氣相許。及廣城遞任。世祖問。代君者誰人。廣城啓曰。無如成某之賢。伯氏超拜都承旨。

Korean Translation

이광성(李廣城)은 문장(文章)과 다스림의 재주가 모두 넉넉해서 항상 스스로 국사(國士)라 하고, 인물을 평할 때는 좋게 말하는 경우가 드물었으나, 특별히 백씨(伯氏)와는 아주 절친한 사이였다. 이광성이 도승지이고 백씨가 우승지였는데, 이광성이 어느 기생을 사랑하여 자취를 감추자 백씨가 간 곳을 알아내고 시를 지어 말하기를, 관아가 파하여 돌아옴에 날이 저물려 하는데 / 衙罷歸來日欲低 명화와 국사가 둘이 서로 만났구나 / 名花國士兩相擕 뉘 집 골목 속에 수레를 숨겼는가 / 誰家巷裏藏車駕 사온서의 동쪽이요, 예부의 서쪽일세 / 司醞東邊禮部西 하고는, 몰래 시를 그 벽에 붙여두었는데, 이광성이 보고 찢어서 소매 속에 넣어버렸다. 이로부터 더욱 뜻이 서로 맞았다. 이광성이 체질될 적에 세조(世祖)가, “군(君)에 대신할 자가 누구냐?”고 물으니, 이광성이 아뢰기를, “성(成) 아무개보다 나은 사람이 없습니다.” 하여, 백씨가 도승지에 등급을 뛰어넘어 제배(除拜)되었다.

English Translation

Grand Prince of Kwangnŭng, Yi Kŭkpae 李克培 (1422–1495), had talents in both literature and statecraft. He often referred to himself as a “Scholar of the State” and was penurious in assessing the worth of others, except when it came to my eldest brother, with whom he formed a friendship for which he could sacrifice his own life. Yi held the position of First Royal Secretary (tosŭngji), while my brother served as the Third Royal Secretary (usŭngji). Yi fell in love with an exceptional kisaeng and kept his whereabouts a secret. When my brother discovered where Yi was staying, he wrote the following poem, 衙罷歸來日欲低名花國士兩相携誰家巷裏藏車駕司醞東邊禮部西 After your duties at the court, you return here as the sun begins to set.The famous beauty and the Scholar of the State embrace each other.At whose house have youhidden away your carriage?It must be to the east of the Wine Bureau, to the west of the Rites Ministry. He discreetly posted the poem on the wall of the house where Yi was staying. When Yi saw the poem, he tore it and hid it in his sleeve. This incident only deepened their friendship further. When Yi’s term came to an end, King Sejo inquired, “Who could replace you?” Yi replied, “There is no one as wise as official Sŏng.” Consequently, my eldest brother was appointed as the new First Royal Secretary.
