English Translation
Kil Chae 吉再 (1353–1419) grieved the fall of Koryŏ. He resigned from his position as Recorder of the Royal Secretariat (munha chusŏ) and withdrew to his residence in Kŭmo Mountain in Kyŏngsang province. He vowed not to serve at the court. Our court treated him with propriety and did not force him against his will. He gathered the students in his county and divided them into two groups: the children of yangban in the upper room and those of commoners in the lower room. He taught them the classics and histories and tested their dedication. The number of students who learned from him on a daily basis exceeded a hundred.Once he wrote a poem titled “Dwelling in Idleness” 閑居詩, 盥手淸泉冷臨身茂樹高冠童來問字聊可與逍遙 I wash my hands in the clear and cold fountain, and lean on a lush and tall tree.Small and big children come to learn how to read. This moment is as good as free and easy wandering. In a thatched hut by a stream, I dwell alone in idleness. Silvery moon and clear wind, my inspiration abounds. With no visitors around, I converse with mountain birds.Bringing my bed into a bamboo thicket, I recline and browse through books.
