余於辛未年間。在坡州別墅。一日余伯氏陪太夫人。往登珍岩巖枕洛河。其高千仞。上可坐百許人。西接海門。北與松都相對。松嶽五冠聖聖居諸山。如在咫尺。風景勝於蠶嶺。是時日斜。忽飛雨聚集。有虹自巖頭小井。入于江中。光輝所照。人面皆黃。腥穢之氣。人不敢近。眞天地之淫氣。而古人之言不許也。伯氏作詩曰。江波渺渺水如空。泛泛漁舟箇箇同。日暮顚風吹雨過。晩虹時起斷岡東。

Korean Translation

내가 신미년에 파주(坡州)의 별장에 있었는데, 하루는 나의 백형(伯兄)이 어머니를 모시고 진암(珍巖)에 올라갔었다. 바위는 임진강[洛河]을 베개로 삼고 그 높이가 천 길이나 되는데, 그 위에는 백여 명이나 앉을 만하였다. 서쪽은 해문(海門)에 닿아 있고, 북쪽은 송도(松都)와 더불어 서로 마주보아 송악산, 관악산, 성거산(聖居山) 등 여러 산이 마치 지척에 있는 것 같고, 풍경은 잠령(蠶領)보다도 좋았다. 이때 해가 기울어지면서 문득 비가 몰려오고, 무지개가 바위 위에 있는 조그마한 우물에서 강 속으로 들어가니, 빛이 비치는 곳마다 사람의 얼굴이 모두 노랗게 되고, 비릿한 기(氣)가 있어 사람이 감히 가까이 할 수 없으니 참으로 천지의 부기(浮氣)이니, 옛 사람의 말이 헛된 것이 아니었다. 백형은 시를 짓기를, 출렁이는 강물은 아득히 허공과 같고 / 江波渺渺水如空 둥둥 뜬 고깃배는 하나하나가 다 같구나 / 泛泛漁舟箇箇同 저물녘 바람 불고 무지개 비 지나더니 / 日暮顚風虹雨過 늦은 무지개가 때마침 떠올라 강동을 끊는구나 / 晩虹時起斷崗東 하였다.

English Translation

In the year of sinmi (1451), I was at my family’s country home in P’aju. One day, my eldest brother and our mother visited Chinam Rock. This majestic rock sat on the Nak River, towering a thousand feet tall, without enough space on top to accommodate over a hundred people. The estuary lay to its west and Songdo to its north. Mt. Songak, Mt. Okwan, Mt. Sŏnggŏ, and others appeared to be within reach. The beauty of the scenery surpassed even that of Chamnyŏng. As the sun began to set, a sudden shower swiftly passed by. Then, a rainbow emerged, spanning from a small well by the rock to the middle of the river. Its radiant glow cast a yellow hue on people's faces. But there was a strong stench in the air, deterring anyone from getting too close. It was truly an ominous air of heaven and earth. The words of the ancient man therefore were not unfounded. My eldest brother then composed the following poem, 江波渺渺水如空泛泛漁舟箇箇同日暮顚風吹雨過晩虹時起斷岡東 The river’s waves stretch on, its water like the empty sky.Fishing boats drift along,every one of them looking alike.At dusk, after the mountain breeze wafted the rain to pass,an evening rainbow appears, cutting across the eastern ridge.
