In the kyŏngsul year (1670), as Governor (kwanch’alsa) of Kyŏnggi province I went to Kaesŏng, Hamgyŏng province, to welcome the imperial envoy. To Kim Suhang, who was serving as a Welcoming Official, I presented a regulated verse, 同時俱以少年稱倏忽光陰老病仍任重兩朝君已倦治兼三輔我何能詩名夢裏才還錦行役秋來尚飲冰安得靑山分一半木蓮花下訪閑僧 Together at the same time, we were called youths. In a flash, the light dimmed, and old age and illness followed.Bearing heavy loads for two dynasties, you have grown weary.Governing the Three Core Regions at once, what can I possibly do?As for poetic fame, in a dream I just returned my silk. While on journey, fall came but I’m still drinking ice water. How can you and I share a green mountain, and under magnolia blossoms visit a carefree monk? Kim’s response poem said, 雲龍韓孟世同稱聚散悲歡十載仍病後形骸憐我倦公餘詩筆見君能顛毛鏡裏千莖雪心事壺中一片冰暮景田園携手去不妨生計淡於僧 Clouds and dragons, Han and Meng, the world calls them in pair.Meetings and partings, sorrows and joys, followed us for ten years.Being sick, I look emaciated. You pity I am exhausted. In your leisurely poems and calligraphy, I see your talent. My hair in the mirror, a thousand roots of snow.My heart in the wine jar, a patch of cold ice.Into the sunset garden, hand in hand, we go.Might as well live a plain life like a monk. Again in the kyech’uk year (1673), when Kim went to Beijing, I went to meet him and presented a regulated verse which said, 溪堂曾吐相公茵濟院違攀使者輪病起仍逢南至日詩成却寄北行人知音半世纔同患傷別中年各損眞前度靑衫今赤舃定敎殊域拭眸新 At the creekside abode, I once vomited on your mat.Outside the Ji Garden, I blocked and grabbed onto the official’s carriage wheel. After recovering from illness, you were waiting for the day to move south.Yet this poem of mine I send to a man traveling north.Bosom friends for half a life share each other’s burdens.Painful parting in midlife, we each feel this loss.Back then you were in a blue robe. Today you are in red shoes. In the foreign land, be sure to fill your eyes with things new. When Kim arrived at Jiulian Fortress, he wrote a response poem and sent to me. 荒山毳幕雪爲茵獨夜歸心月半輪關樹尙懸天外夢驛梅誰寄隴頭人詩來別恨差堪慰老去交情始見眞廿載重遊君莫問感懷依舊鬢毛新 A tent in a barren mountain, snow as a mat.Lonely night, a homesick heart, under the half wheel moon.On the frontier trees still hangs my dream beyond the sky.Who sent the plum blossoms by the station to this man at the frontier? When your poem came, parting’s grief received some comfort. As I age, friendship begins to show heartfelt truth. After twenty years, I travel again. Please don’t ask me why.Sentiments are still the same, but the hair on my temples is new. |
