余之妻祖蔡蓴塘亨震早登上舍。值昏朝。避世于常山。一生攻詩。嘗得一聯曰。畏蛇防燕壘。憐蝶壞蛛絲。信乎。窮者之語妻父知非公詩格不凡而世無知者。亂後。過山城有吟曰。三綱已斁國垂傾。公議千秋愧汗靑。忍背神宗皇帝德。何顏宣祖大王庭。寧為北地王諶死。不作東窓賊檜生。野老呑聲行且哭。穆陵殘日照微誠。此詩膾炙當時。而亦不知為作者之作也。又到漢江,題曉霧曰。也疑商女惱春愁。曝盡輕紗夜未收。喚却兒童看仔細。白雲無事宿沙頭。乂題北關曰。大嶺以東天與海。咸原之北地皆山
My wife’s grandfather Ch’ae Chinhyŏng 蔡震亨 (17th century; sobriquet Sundang [Bracenia Pond]) became a Literary Licentiate (chinsa) early. But it was the time of King Kwanghaegun, so he secluded himself in Sangsan in Ch’ungch’ŏng province and dedicated his whole life to poetry. A couplet he once wrote reads, 畏蛇防燕壘憐蝶壞蛛絲 Fearing the snake, I protect the swallow nest.Pitying the butterfly, I destroy the cobweb. How could these be the words of a destitute scholar? My father-in-law knew that the style of his father’s poetry (sigyŏk) was out of the ordinary (pulbŏm) yet no one else knew about it. After the Imjin War, while passing a mountain fortress, my wife’s grandfather wrote, 三綱已斁國垂傾公議千秋愧汗靑忍背神宗皇帝德何顏宣祖大王庭寧為北地王諶死不作東窗賊檜生野老吞聲行且哭穆陵殘日照微城 The Three Bonds have been broken. The kingdom is in decline. The public’s opinions for a thousand years will disgrace the annals. How can we turn our backs on Emperor Shenzong’s favorand dare to face King Sŏnjo in the court?I’d rather die like Liu Chen, the Northern King,than live like Qin Hui, the plotter by the east window. An uncouth old man, gulping down his sobs, walks and weeps. Over Mok Mausoleum, the sun sets, lighting up the dim city. The poem was relished (hoeja) at the time, yet people did not know whose poem it was. Again, arriving at the Han River, he wrote a poem on the morning mist. 也疑商女惱春愁曝盡輕紗夜未收喚卻兒童看仔細白雲無事宿沙頭 I wondered if the girl singer was disheartened by spring melancholy.Her fine silk has all dried. The night is here, and it hasn’t been collected.I ask a child to check her up close.Under the white clouds, free from care, she is staying overnight at the beach. Also, his poem on the northern frontier pass reads, 大嶺以東天與海咸原之北地接山 To the east of Taeryŏng, the sky befriends the sea.To the north of Hamwŏn, the earth meets the mountain.
